Nurse Quality

Grade: B

On top of having a decent overall score, we also wanted to note that this facility received favorable nursing marks this year. We awarded them one of our better scores in that area, with a B. This proved to be the facility's top score. Nursing scores are heavily correlated with levels of nurse staffing. This nursing home provides 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also looked at several nursing quality-based metrics and this facility excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any nursing home Michigan in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can frequently be avoided by providing better nursing care, such as employing a protocol of moving a resident more often.

Facility Inspections

Grade: B-minus

This nursing home actually received a solid inspection report this year as well, with few major dings from the applicable government inspectors. As a result, it received one of our better grades in that category with a score of B-. Inspection scores are tied to many datapoints located in the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Deficiencies are an important item to look for on these reports. Severe deficiencies indicate a threat to the well being of residents. This particular nursing home received 13 deficiencies on its inspection report. Overall, this is still a solid inspection report, but we'd always recommend looking into any deficiencies you find troubling.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: C

This facility was awarded its next most favorable category grade in the area of short-term care. We gave this facility a grade of C in this area, which is a respectable score. Short-term care ratings are based on a facility's quantity of skilled nursing services. This includes a broad range of nursing services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and respiratory therapists, not to mention other types of therapy. We were surprised to find that this nursing home was below average in the two key staffing areas we assessed. The facility provided fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most other facilities. Lastly, we considered the number of residents who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. We found that 5.3 percent of this facility's patients returned home. At most nursing homes, closer to half of their patients are able to return home so this figure is below average.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: C

The next area we analyzed is long-term care. We gave this facility a grade of C in this category. Our long-term care ratings are based in part on the facility's volume of care. This includes a vast spectrum of personal care services, ranging from assistance with activities of daily living to routine medical services. After assessing the volume of care provided by nurses and other staff, we then looked at the nursing home's vaccination statistics. This nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its patients against pneumonia, which is higher than the majority of nursing homes. This nursing home was able to keep its residents out of the hospital. Indeed, it had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.
