Long-term Care Quality
One of the many reasons this turned out to be a great nursing home is that it received an A+ long-term care grade. This is simply as good as it gets in this category. When facilities receive this kind of grade in long-term care it is usually a good sign for resident care and suggests that the place is well-staffed with nurses and aids. In addition to offering very favorable levels of nursing care and other staffing, this nursing home gave the pneumonia vaccine to 97.30942 percent of its patients. This statistic is also significantly higher than the majority of nursing homes. Lastly, we looked at the facility's number of hospitalizations. Here we found that this nursing home had 2.01 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days.
Facility Inspections
This nursing home also earned an A+ inspection score, making it one of the rare nursing homes to receive multiple A+'s in our category grades. This grade is based on the facility's government inspections. An A+ in this category is one of the biggest complements we can pay to a nursing home. Our inspection scores are tied to items found on the a nursing home's inspections. Nursing homes that receive favorable grades in this area tend to have very few deficiencies on their reports. Most importantly, these facilities generally do not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with risks to patient safety. While this facility had some deficiencies on its government inspection report, none were major deficiencies based on CMS' deficiency scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Nurse Quality
This first-rate facility also excelled in the area of nursing, where it received a grade of A+. Few nursing homes performed better in this area. There are quite a few datapoints included in this grade. Most of the criteria relate to staffing levels. This place provided 5.5 hours of nursing care per patient each day, which is among the highest totals in the country. A significant percentage of those hours were provided by registered nurses, which are one of the more skilled levels of nurses. We were very impressed by both of these figures. On top of offering impressive levels of nursing care, this facility also performed well in several of the quality-based metrics we looked at. By way of illustration, in terms of the number of its patients suffering falls leading to serious injury, this facility performed as well as any nursing home the country. Avoiding major falls is typically an indicator that a facility has reliable quality controls in place. Major falls can often be avoided if more nurses aids and better safety protocols are employed.
Short-term Care Quality
In our final category, this nursing home was given another A+ for its short-term care rating, topping off an amazing profile of A+'s in each of our categories. Our short-term care scores are arguably more important for residents in need of a nursing home for rehabilitation. Rehabilitation typically requires additional skilled nursing. Skilled nursing means not only nursing services, but also physical and speech therapy, as well as other variations of therapy. One reason for this facility's favorable grade in this area is that it offers more care from registered nurses than the typical facility. The final metric we assessed in this category is the percentage of residents that who were able to eventually return home from the nursing home. It performed as well as just about any facility in Maine with 59.6 percent of its patients returning home.
