Short-term Care Quality
We also found that this facility excelled in our short-term care rating. We awarded them an impressive grade of A+ in this category. Our short-term care grades are arguably most meaningful for those requiring rehabilitation from their nursing home. Rehabilitation usually requires higher levels of highly-skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes not just nursing services, but also physical and speech therapy, as well as other variations of therapy. Remarkably, this place provides roughly 1.5 times as many hours of services from physical therapists and registered nurses than most facilities we assessed. This is often an encouraging sign. The last item we assessed in this category is the number of residents that were able to return home from the facility. We found that it fared as well as just about any nursing home in New Mexico in this area with 67.4 percent of its residents returning home. Unfortunately, at most facilities, fewer than half of their short-term residents are able to return home.
Facility Inspections
This facility has received near flawless health inspections in recent years. We awarded them an impressive grade of A in this area. Inspection ratings take several factors into consideration, including deficiencies and substantiated complaints. You can find more information about each of these items by reviewing copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. While this facility had a few deficiencies on its inspection report, none of them were severe based on CMS' deficiency scale. The fact that the deficiencies were relatively minor leaves us less concerned with this inspection report.
Nurse Quality
Adding to its strong resume, this facility also received an excellent nursing score, with a grade of A. The nursing grade includes a host of subcategories. The most heavily weighted one is the amount of time nurses spent with patients. This place provided 4.7 hours of nursing care per patient each day, which is among the highest figures in the country. A significant percentage of those hours were provided by registered nurses, which are one of the most highly skilled levels of nurses. We are really impressed by both of these statistics. On top of offering high levels of care, this place also fared well in many of the quality measures we looked at. In terms of the percentage of its residents suffering falls leading to major injury, this facility outpaced the national average.
Long-term Care Quality
The next category we assessed is long-term care, in which this facility received a B. Even though this proved to be its worst category score, this is nevertheless a strong rating. When nursing homes receive a grade in this range in this category it generally means it's well-staffed and is a quality place to reside on a permanent basis. Once we looked at the amount of care provided by aids and other staff, we turned to the nursing home's vaccination data. This nursing home vaccinated 94.73684 percent of its patients for pneumonia, which is more than the average nursing home. Clearly, this facility is doing something right in this area as it also excelled at keeping its patients out of the hospital. It had only 0 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.
