Facility Inspections
Although we were not high on this nursing home's overall performance, it did receive an impressive inspection report this year with few dings from the applicable government inspectors. As a result, it received one of our better grades in that category with a grade of B+. Arguably the most important factor we consider in determining our inspection scores is deficiencies. Deficiencies are found on a facility's recent inspection reports. It is generally in your best interest to avoid facilities that had a long list of severe deficiencies. While this place had a few minor dings on its inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are those found in categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This tells you the government inspectors didn't deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. A couple minor deficiencies aren't necessarily the end of the world.
Long-term Care Quality
This facility also was given a strong long-term care grade. As a matter of fact, we awarded them a grade of B+ in that category, which is one of our better. For prospective patients in need of a permanent place to live rather than skilled nursing, long-term care is a very important category. Once we assessed the amount of care provided by nurses and other staff, we turned to the facility's vaccination data. This nursing home vaccinated 80.98039 percent of its patients for pneumonia, which happens to be a bit below what we anticipated but still a reasonably acceptable figure. Lastly, we looked at its number of hospitalizations. We found that this place had 2.57 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days.
Nurse Quality
Turning to the area of nursing care, this facility received a grade of just D in this category. The nursing category weighs several subcategories, many of which are based on nursing hours. This nursing home provided just 3.2 hours of nursing care per resident on a daily basis. In addition to receiving below average marks for total nursing hours, this facility was a bit less impressive in some of the quality-based metrics we looked at in computing our nursing grades. We looked at the percentage of patients sustaining pressure ulcers and found this facility was at approximately 150 percent of the national average in this metric. This is a bad sign when you consider that many bed sores are preventable with better nursing care. This statistic pulled down this nursing home's nursing score significantly.
Short-term Care Quality
The next area we rated is short-term care, where this facility was given a very poor score in this category also. Unfortunately, we gave it an abysmal F for this area, which is obviously a major disappointment. Our short-term care ratings are based in part on a facility's quantity of highly-skilled skilled healthcare professionals. This includes a vast spectrum of services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and respiratory therapists, not to mention other variations of therapy. We found that this place was below average in two of the key staffing metrics we looked at. The facility supplied fewer registered nurse and physical therapist hours per patient than most other facilities. Lastly, we looked at the percentage of patients who were able to return to the community from this facility. This definitely wasn't a strength for this facility. We found that just 20.3 percent of this facility's residents returned home. At most facilities, about half of their patients are able to return home so this is well below average.
