While we were not very complementary of this nursing home's overall score, it actually received a very impressive inspection report this year. In fact, it received an excellent inspection report this year. As a result, it earned one of our best grades in that category with a grade of A-. Our inspection scores weigh a host of factors found on a nursing home's inspection reports. One of the most important criteria we look at is the number and severity of deficiencies. You generally want to avoid nursing homes with too many deficiencies flagged. While this place had some minor dings on its report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are those labeled as categories G through L. This means CMS didn't consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. A few minor deficiencies are not necessarily the end of the world.

Unfortunately, this facility only received a grade of D for its nursing grade, which was actually one of its better category grades. There are quite a few datapoints included in this category. Many of these datapoints reflect the quantity of nurse staffing. This facility provided a meager 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident on a daily basis. This number is significantly below the national average. Finally, we also looked at some nursing quality measures in computing our nursing ratings. This facility fared well in terms of avoiding pressure ulcers and major falls. We consider these datapoints to be measures of the quality of nursing care.

In addition, we gave this facility a rock-bottom F in the category of short-term care. Short-term care scores are based in part on the nursing home's quantity of highly-skilled nursing services. This includes a broad spectrum of nursing services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and occupational therapists, in addition to other types of therapy. Not surprisingly, we found that this nursing home provides far less physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than the average facility. Lastly, we assessed the percentage of patients who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. This wasn't a strength for this facility. We found that just 0 percent of this nursing home's patients returned home. At most nursing homes, about half of their residents are able to return home so this is well below average.

The next area we assessed was long-term care. Sadly, it received a lowly F for this category, which is a bottom of the barrel score. In a long-term care setting, the nursing home's primary goal is to maintain patients' quality of life and keep them safe. After looking at the amount of care provided by nurses and other staff, we then analyzed the nursing home's vaccination statistics. This nursing home vaccinated 99.354836 percent of its residents against pneumonia, which is higher than the average nursing home. To our surprise, this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. With only 0.01 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, this nursing home has less hospitalizations than the majority of nursing homes. Unfortunately, a few of its other scores in the category weren't as favorable as these.
