One of the reasons this is a decent nursing home is it received a favorable inspection score. In this area, we gave this facility a grade of B. Our inspection scores are tied to datapoints located in the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes that receive favorable grades in this area typically have very few deficiencies on those reports. Most importantly, these places should not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with risks to patient safety. While this nursing home had a few minor dings on its inspection report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are those labeled as categories G through L. This means the government inspectors did not consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. A couple minor deficiencies shouldn't stop you from considering a nursing home.

This nursing home also received a strong grade in our nursing category. We awarded this nursing home an above average grade of B in this area. Our nursing rating is primarily associated with a facility's level of nurse staffing. This nursing home provides 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, our nursing grades also factor in quality-based assessments, such as avoiding major falls. This place performed well in this area. Avoiding major falls is typically a good indicator that a place has reliable quality controls in place. Major falls can frequently be avoided if more nurses aids and better safety protocols are in place.

As it turns out, this nursing home only received a D for its short-term care rating, which is not an impressive grade. In the area of short-term care, we strive to qualify indicators of a facility's rehabilitation services. We look at a nursing home's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses and various therapists. With a grade of this caliber for this category, we were not stunned to learn this nursing home was well below average in several staffing areas we focus on. The facility provided far fewer registered nurse and physical therapist hours per patient than most nursing homes. Finally, we considered the number of residents who were able to return to the community from this facility. This definitely wasn't a strength for this nursing home. We found that just 3.8 percent of this nursing home's residents returned home. At most facilities, about half of their patients are able to return home so this is well below average.

This facility's weakest area is long-term care, which is the final category we scored. For this category, we gave this nursing home a D. In a long-term care setting, the nursing home's primary goal is to keep patients as healthy and safe as possible. This is different than skilled nursing or short-term care where the goal is to rehabilitate patients. After looking at the quantity of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we then looked at the facility's vaccination data. This nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its patients against pneumonia, which is higher than the vast majority of nursing homes. Surprisingly, this facility also fared well at keeping its residents out of the hospital. In fact, it had only 0.01 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days. Sadly, a few of its other scores in the category weren't as favorable as these.
