Registered Staff Hours
This facility earned a solid overall grade as described above, but we really wanted to point out its nearly flawless inspections in recent years. We awarded them an impressive grade of A- in this category. Inspection grades are tied to several pieces of information found on the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Places that receive favorable grades in this category have very few deficiencies on their reports. Most importantly, these places generally do not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with endangerment of patients. While this facility had some deficiencies on its report, none were severe based on CMS' scale. A couple of minor deficiencies shouldn't stop you from considering a nursing home.
Short-term Care Quality
We also awarded this nursing home a middle of the pack grade in the category of short-term care, where we gave it a grade of B-. In computing these short-term care ratings, we analyze the facility's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, respiratory therapists, physical therapists and other types of therapists. Our purpose is to devise a measure for comparing the rehabilitation services of various nursing homes. We found that this place was below average in the two key staffing areas we looked at. In fact, it provided fewer registered nurse and physical therapist hours per resident than most other facilities. The last statistic we looked at in this area is the number of residents who were able to leave the facility and return home. We discovered that just 5.3 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home, which is below average.

Long-term Care Quality
This nursing home's next most favorable category is long-term care. We awarded it a grade of C in this area. This is basically a slightly below average score in this area. Our long-term care grade is generally used to grade a nursing home's performance as a traditional convalescent home, as opposed to focusing more on the skilled nursing services offered by a skilled nursing facility. After we finished looking at the amount of nursing care, we next considered the facility's vaccination data. We were pleased to learn that this facility vaccinates 100 percent of its patients against pneumonia. This nursing home keeps its residents out of the hospital. In fact, it had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.
The next area we looked at was nursing. In that category, we gave this facility a grade of C. In determining our nursing grades, we weigh both the number of hours nurses spend with residents and the skill levels of the nurses. This nursing home averages just 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a very low figure. Despite having low quantities of nursing care, this facility fared better in some of the quality-based metrics we looked at. In fact, it performed well in terms of minimizing its residents' pressure ulcers and major falls.
