This facility earned an inspection grade which is stronger than its overall grade. Inspection scores are tied to a nursing home's recent inspections. We awarded this nursing home a very solid grade of B+ in this category. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in calculating our inspection ratings. One of those factors is health deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of the deficiencies is arguably more important than the quantity of deficiencies, as some deficiencies end up being relatively minor. Although this place had some deficiencies on its government inspection report, none were severe based on CMS' deficiency scale. A couple of minor deficiencies should not lead you to cross a nursing home off your list.

This facility's next highest area came in the area of short-term care. In that area, we gave this facility a B-. In computing our short-term care ratings, we scrutinize a nursing home's levels of highly skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists occupational therapists and other licensed professionals. This category is generally a useful assessment of the facility's rehabilitation services. Unfortunately, we found that this place provided fewer registered nurse and physical therapist hours per resident than most other nursing homes. The more important thing is determining what bearing this had on the quality of care. Lastly, we considered the number of patients who were able to return to the community from this facility. We found that 5.1 percent of this facility's residents returned home. At most nursing homes, closer to half of their patients are able to return home so this figure is below average.

The third category we analyzed is long-term care, where this facility received a C in this area. For long-term care residents, the nursing home's primary goal is to keep patients as healthy and safe as possible. This is different than skilled nursing or short-term care where the goal is to rehabilitate residents. In addition to looking at the amount of care provided by aids and other staff, we looked at the number of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This nursing home provided the vaccine to 99.747475 percent of its residents, which is more than the vast majority of nursing homes. Finally, this place was also able to limit hospitalizations. In fact, it had only 0.01 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

The final area we scored is nursing, which is a weak spot for this nursing home. We awarded this facility a grade of just D in nursing. There are quite a few factors within this category. Many of these criteria are tied to nurse staffing. This place provided a meager 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. To go along with its low total nursing hours per resident, this place had poor marks in several of the quality-based measures we looked at in calculating our nursing scores. For starters, we looked at the percentage of residents experiencing falls which led to serious injury. This facility was at more than 150 percent of the national average in this statistic.
