Facility Inspections
Although we did not rate this nursing home highly overall, we want to point out its excellent health inspections in recent years. We awarded them an A in this category. Inspection grades account for a host of factors included in a facility's inspection report. One key criteria we consider is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. You generally want to avoid facilities with too many severe deficiencies flagged. While this nursing home had some deficiencies on its report, none of them were major deficiencies based on CMS' deficiency scale. A few minor deficiencies aren't necessarily the end of the world.
Short-term Care Quality
We also awarded this facility a respectable grade in the area of short-term care, where it received a grade of C. Short-term care scores are important for patients needing rehabilitation. Rehabilitation typically requires higher levels of skilled nursing. Skilled nursing means a wide range of services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and respiratory therapists, as well as other variations of therapy. We found that this place was below average in the two key staffing areas we looked at. In fact, it provided fewer registered nurse and physical therapist hours per resident than most other facilities. The final item we assessed in this area is the percentage of patients who were able to leave the facility and return home. We discovered that just 4.1 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home, which is below average.

Long-term Care Quality
The third area we looked at was long-term care, where this nursing home received an F. For residents in need of a permanent residence as opposed to rehabilitation, long-term care is a very important category. On top of looking at the quantity of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. Fortunately, this nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its residents, which is a very solid total. To our surprise, this place also keeps its residents out of the hospital. It had only 0.01 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. Unfortunately, some of its other scores in the category were not as favorable as these.
Nurse Quality
Turning to our next area, this nursing home really did not fare very well in this area either. With a bottom of the barrel grade of F in nursing, this is about as terrible as it gets. Our nursing score assesses the nursing home's level of nurse staffing. We factor in both the levels of skill of those nurses and the quantity of hours spent with residents. This facility provided just 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a very low total compared to most nursing homes. To pair with its low totals in the area of nursing hours per patient, this nursing home also did not perform as well in the quality-based measures we looked at in determining our nursing ratings. We looked at the percent of patients sustaining major falls and pressure ulcers. This nursing home had more pressure ulcers and falls than the average facility. This could be a bad sign when you consider that many falls and bed sores are believed to be preventable with better nursing care. Unfortunately, these statistics pulled down this facility's nursing rating significantly.
