In addition to being a respectable nursing home overall, this place really excelled in the category of inspections, where it received an A+. Few facilities performed better in this area. Arguably the most significant factor we consider in determining our inspection grades is deficiencies. Deficiencies are found on a facility's recent inspection reports. Places with better scores in this area typically dodged the most severe deficiencies involving patient abuse or death. While this facility had a few minor dings on its inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones labeled as categories G through L. This means CMS didn't deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. The fact that the deficiencies were relatively minor made us feel better about this inspection report.

This nursing home also received a strong grade in our nursing category. We awarded this nursing home an above average grade of B in this area. There are a variety of factors within this category. Most of these criteria reflect levels of nurse staffing. This facility provided 3.8 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also assessed several nursing quality measures and this place excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any place the country in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can often be avoided by offering better nursing care, such as having a system of turning a patient more frequently.

The next most favorable category we gave this nursing home in any area came in the category of long-term care, where we awarded it a B-. For prospective residents seeking a permanent place to live as opposed to skilled nursing, long-term care grades are an important measure. On top of looking at the amount of care provided by nurses and other staff, we also looked at the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. We found that this nursing home administered the vaccine to only 78.64078 percent of its residents, which is slightly concerning. On a more positive note, this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. With only 1.56 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, this nursing home had less hospitalizations than most nursing homes.

The next category we analyzed was short-term care. We gave this nursing home a D in our short-term care category, leaving this as the nursing home's worst area. In the area of short-term care, we strive to evaluate measures of a facility's rehabilitation services. We analyze a nursing home's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses and physical, occupational and other therapists. Unfortunately, this nursing home was below average in terms of its quantity of registered nurse hours provided to its residents based on the measures we assessed. Lastly, we considered the percentage of patients who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. This definitely was not a strength for this facility. We found that just 42.7 percent of this facility's patients returned home. At most facilities, around half of their patients are able to return home so this is well below average.
