Short-term Care Quality
One of the many reasons this turned out to be a great nursing home is that it earned an A+ short-term care grade. This is simply as good as it gets in this category. In our short-term care grade, we strive to craft a valuable gauge for rehabilitation services. In doing so, we look at the nursing home's level of highly-skilled nursing services, including both registered nurses and physical therapy, as well as respiratory therapy. This facility excelled at the highest level in the two key staffing areas we looked at. It offered about 50% more care from physical therapists and registered nurses than the average nursing home. This is an excellent sign. The final datapoint we assessed in this category is the number of residents who were able to return home from the facility. We found that it performed as well as just about any facility in Michigan in this area with 78.3 percent of its patients returning home.
Long-term Care Quality
This first-rate facility also dominated in the category of long-term care, where we awarded it a score of A+. Only a small group of facilities performed better in this area. When nursing homes receive this type of score in long-term care it is usually a good sign for resident care and indicates that the place is well-staffed with nurses and aids. One of the factors we considered on top of this facility's quality nursing hours is vaccinations. This nursing home provided the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its residents. Vaccines are a great way to avoid unnecessary hospitalizations for seniors. This combination proved to be effective as this nursing home was able to keep its residents out of the hospital. In fact, it had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.
Nurse Quality
Another reason we rated this nursing home so highly is that it received an A+ nursing grade. This is simply as good as it gets in this category. Our nursing score consists of quite a few datapoints, many of which are associated with levels of nurse staffing. This place provided 6.7 hours of nursing care per patient daily, which is among the higher figures in the country. A significant portion of those hours were provided by registered nurses, which are one of the most highly skilled levels of nurses. We were very impressed by both of these statistics. On top of providing impressive levels of nursing care, this facility also excelled in several of the quality measures we looked at. With under 5 percent of its patients suffering from pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any place Michigan in this category.
Facility Inspections
Finally, we wanted to emphasize this facility's nearly flawless government inspections in recent years. We awarded them a B+ in this category. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in calculating these inspection grades. One key factor is deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of deficiencies is usually more important than the quantity of deficiencies, as some deficiencies end up being quite insignificant. While this facility had a few deficiencies on its report, none were severe based on CMS' deficiency scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
