Facility Inspections
While we were not high on this facility overall, we awarded it an A- for our inspections rating. This score is far more impressive than the nursing home's overall grade. Inspection scores account for several factors included in a nursing home's inspection report. One key criteria we look at is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. You generally want to avoid places with too many severe deficiencies flagged. Amazingly, this was one of the few nursing homes in the country that had no deficiencies whatsoever on its inspection report. This is very impressive. The lack of deficiencies proved to be this place's greatest strength.
Short-term Care Quality
This facility's second most favorable category was its short-term care score, where it was given a grade of B-. In computing our short-term care grades, we analyze a facility's levels of highly skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists occupational therapists and other highly skilled individuals. This score is often a reliable measure of a nursing home's rehabilitation services. We were surprised to find that this nursing home was below average in the two key staffing areas we looked at. The facility offered fewer registered nurse and physical therapist hours per resident than most other facilities. It is still important to determine whether this is adversely impacting the quality of care. The last datapoint we looked at in this area is the number of residents who were able to return home from the facility. We found that just 5.4 percent of this facility's residents returned home. Unfortunately, this was below the national average.

Nurse Quality
Turning to the area of nursing care, this facility received a grade of just D in this category. Nursing ratings are based in large part on quality and quantity of nursing care. This nursing home offered just 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident each day. This is well below average. Lastly, we also looked at some nursing quality-based metrics in determining our nursing ratings. This nursing home performed well when it comes to avoiding pressure ulcers and major falls.
Long-term Care Quality
The next area we looked at was long-term care, which turned out to be a low point for this facility. We awarded this nursing home a grade of D in our long-term care category. For prospective residents in need of a permanent residence rather than rehabilitation, long-term care is a very important category. In addition to considering the amount of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we also looked at the number of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This nursing home provided the vaccine to 100 percent of its patients, which is better than most nursing homes. To our surprise, this place was able to keep its patients out of the hospital. It had just 0.02 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. Unfortunately, a few of its other scores in this category weren't as favorable as these.
