To pair with its relatively modest overall score, we awarded this nursing home a grade of A- for our inspections rating. This score is far more impressive than its overall grade. Inspection ratings weigh several factors included in a nursing home's inspection report. One of the most important criteria we rely on is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Facilities with higher grades in this area tend to have few severe deficiencies. Although this facility had a few deficiencies on its government inspection report, none of them were severe based on CMS' scale. The fact that none of the deficiencies were severe leaves us less concerned with this inspection report.

We also awarded this facility a strong score in long-term care. This facility earned a B in this category, which happens to be one of our better scores. Nursing homes that receive this kind of grade in this category typically provide consistent around the clock care to make sure patients are well cared for. In addition to looking at the quantity of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility administered the vaccine to 99.05063 percent of its patients, which is much higher than the majority of nursing homes. Lastly, we looked at the facility's number of hospitalizations. Here we found that this facility had 3.63 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. Although this admittedly wasn't as strong as some of its other scores in this area, this statistic can be skewed for some facilities based on some of the preexisting medical conditions of residents.

This nursing home's third highest area was its short-term care score, where it was given a B-. Short-term care grades are commonly employed to gauge a nursing home's performance with rehabilitation In order to provide good rehabilitation services, nursing homes generally need to feature higher levels of highly skilled nursing. These types of services include registered nurses, physical therapists, respiratory therapists and other licensed professionals. We were pleased to find that this nursing home employs both registered nurses and physical therapists. The same can't be said for all nursing homes. Lastly, we considered the number of residents who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. This was a much stronger area for this facility. It outperformed most facilities in this area with 57.1 percent of its patients returning home.

Moving on to the final category, we gave this nursing home a grade of D in our nursing category. This was the nursing home's worst category rating. Of course, this score pulled down the facility's overall grade to a certain degree. In determining our nursing grades, we look at both staffing levels and the skill levels of those nurses. In this nursing home's case, quantity of care does not appear to be the problem. According to its CMS reports, this facility provided an average of 4 hours of nursing care per resident each day, which was above the national average. Despite performing well in terms of nursing hours, this nursing home didn't perform as well in the quality-based measures we looked at in determining our nursing ratings. We looked at the percent of patients sustaining major falls and pressure ulcers. This facility was above the national average in both of these metrics.
