Facility Inspections
This nursing home earned a solid overall grade as described above, but we really wanted to point out its nearly flawless government inspection reports in recent years. We gave them an A- in this category. Perhaps the most important factor we look at in calculating our inspection scores is deficiencies. Deficiencies are found on a nursing home's inspection reports. Places with higher scores in this category typically avoided the most severe deficiencies involving patient abuse or death. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is always a good sign.
Long-term Care Quality
We also gave this nursing home a strong score in long-term care. This facility received a grade of B+ in this category, which turns out to be one of our more favorable grades. Nursing homes that excel in this category typically are well-staffed and provide extensive hands on care to patients. One of the factors we considered in addition to nursing hours was vaccines. This facility provided the pneumonia vaccination to 99.70238 percent of its patients. This is a proven method to avoid unnecessary hospitalizations for the senior population. Finally, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. With just 1.66 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, this nursing home has less hospitalizations than the average nursing home.
Short-term Care Quality
We also awarded this nursing home a respectable grade in the area of short-term care, where we awarded it a C. Short-term care ratings are based on a facility's quantity of highly-skilled nursing services. This includes a wide spectrum of nursing services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and occupational therapists, as well as other variations of therapy. This nursing home employs both physical therapists and registered nurses. Not all facilities employ these skilled professionals. The last item we assessed in this category is the percentage of patients who were able to leave the facility and return to the community. We found that it fared well in this area with 62.1 percent of its patients returning home. This proved to be a big boost to its grade in this area.
Nurse Quality
The next category we assessed is nursing. It received an abysmal F for this area, which is a very poor grade. This is certainly a major concern. We weighed the qualifications of nurses at the facility, as well as the number of hours those nurses were with patients, in calculating our rating in this category. This nursing home provides 2.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a much lower figure than we are used to seeing. On top of receiving below average scores for total nursing hours, this nursing home was less impressive in some of the quality-based measures we looked at in determining our nursing scores. We looked at the percentage of residents sustaining pressure ulcers and found this facility was at roughly 1.5 times the national average in this statistic.
