Short-term Care Quality
In addition to receiving a great overall grade, this nursing home received an A+ in the area of short-term care. Our short-term care scores are based in part on a nursing home's quantity of skilled skilled healthcare professionals. This means a wide range of services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and respiratory therapists, not to mention other forms of therapy. This facility excelled in the two key staffing areas we looked at. It offered more care from physical therapists and registered nurses than the average nursing home. This is generally an excellent sign. The final measure we assessed in this area is the percentage of residents that who were able to eventually return home from the nursing home. We found that it performed as well as just about any nursing home in Kansas in this area with 71.6 percent of its residents returning home. At most nursing homes, fewer than half of their short-stay residents are able to return home.
Facility Inspections
This facility also received an A+ inspection grade, making it one of the rare nursing homes to receive multiple A+'s in our categories. This is based on the nursing home's recent inspections. Perhaps the most significant factor we consider in determining our inspection ratings is deficiencies. Deficiencies can be found on a facility's inspection reports. Nursing homes with better scores in this area most likely dodged the more severe deficiencies involving health risks or even death. Although this nursing home had some deficiencies on its inspection report, none of them were severe based on CMS' scale. The fact that none of the deficiencies were severe leaves us less concerned with this inspection report.
Nurse Quality
Adding to its strong resume, this facility also received an excellent nursing score, with a grade of A. Our nursing rating analyzes many components, many of which are tied to nursing hours. This nursing home offers high levels of nursing care, with an average of 3.9 hours per resident each day. This is more nursing care than most nursing homes provide. Finally, this facility also excelled in the quality-based metrics we assessed. It performed as well as any facility Kansas in terms of minimizing its residents' pressure ulcers and major falls.
Long-term Care Quality
The last category we scored is long-term care. In that category, we gave this nursing home a solid grade of B-. This turned out to be this nursing home's weakest area. In calculating our long-term care grades, we look at the personal care offered to the facility's patients. On top of assessing the high quantity of care provided by nurses aids and other staff at this facility, we also were happy with the facility's record for vaccinations. By way of example, this facility administered the pneumonia vaccine to 96 percent of its patients, which is above average. Lastly, this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. With just 1.39 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, this nursing home has less hospitalizations than the average nursing home.
