Facility Inspections
While we graded this facility incredibly poorly overall, it received a fairly respectable inspection report this year. As a result, it received a decent grade in that category with a score of C. Inspection scores account for several factors included in a nursing home's inspection reports. One key criteria we rely on is the number and severity of deficiencies. This facility was hit with 2 deficiencies on its inspection report, but none were in any of the categories labeled G through L. This indicates that CMS did not deem any of the deficiencies to present an imminent danger to patient health or safety. Unfortunately, we also need to draw your attention to the fact that this facility received significant government fines in recent years.
Nurse Quality
This facility's second best category was nursing, but even there it received a grade of just D. This is still a well below average grade. Nursing grades are largely associated with a nursing home's nurse staffing. This nursing home averaged just 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident each day. This is an alarmingly low total. Lastly, we also assessed some nursing quality measures in computing our nursing grades. This facility fared well when it comes to minimizing its residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. Many consider these statistics to be indicators of the quality of nursing care.
Does this page answer your questions about The Grand Rehabilitation and Nursing at Barnwell?
Short-term Care Quality
The third category we analyzed was short-term care. This facility's received a rock-bottom short-term care grade where it was given a lowly F. Our short-term care ratings are vital for individuals looking for rehabilitation. Rehabilitation typically utilizes more highly-skilled nursing. This includes a broad scope of nursing services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and occupational therapists, as well as other forms of therapy. Given its abysmal grade in this category, we weren't shocked to learn this nursing home provides significantly fewer registered nurse and physical therapist hours per patient than most facilities. Lastly, we looked at the number of residents who ultimately were able to return home from this nursing home. This facility didn't fare well here either. In fact, we found that just 3.2 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home. This figure was well off the national average.
Long-term Care Quality
The next area we graded was long-term care. It received an abysmal F for this area, which is an abysmal grade. For long-term care residents, the facility's primary goal is to maintain patients' quality of life and keep them safe. On top of assessing the volume of care provided by aids and other staff, we analyzed the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility provided the vaccine to 96.8599 percent of its patients. To our surprise, this place also fared well at keeping its residents out of the hospital. Indeed, it had just 0.01 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. Sadly, some of its other scores in the category were not as favorable as these.
