Facility Inspections
One of the reasons this ended up being a quality nursing home is it received a very impressive inspection grade. Inspections turned out to be its best category. In that area, we gave this facility a grade of A. Perhaps the most significant factor we consider in calculating our inspection ratings is deficiencies. These deficiencies are found on a facility's inspection reports. Places with better grades in this category typically avoided the more severe deficiencies involving health risks or even death. Although this place had a few deficiencies on its inspection report, none were severe based on CMS' deficiency scale. A few minor dings aren't the end of the world.
Short-term Care Quality
On the list of its many elite scores, this facility was awarded a strong short-term care grade. In fact, it received a score of A- in this area. In computing our short-term care scores, we analyze the nursing home's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. Our purpose is to formulate a scale for comparing the rehabilitation services of nursing homes. Fortunately, this nursing home offers both physical therapists and registered nurses. Not all facilities offer both. This nursing home performed much better in the final datapoint we considered in this area, which was the number of residents who were able to leave the facility and return to the community. We found that it fared as well as just about any facility in California in this area with 64.4 percent of its patients returning home. Unfortunately, at most facilities, fewer than half of their short-term residents are able to return home.
Nurse Quality
This nursing home also received a strong nursing score. In fact, we awarded it an above average grade of B+ in this area. In computing a facility's nursing grade, we consider the amount of time nurses spend with patients as well as the skill levels of the nurses. This nursing home provides 4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is higher than the level of care offered by most facilities. Finally, this facility also excelled in the quality measures we looked at. It performed as well as any facility the nation in terms of avoiding major falls and pressure ulcers.
Long-term Care Quality
In the final category we assessed, this nursing home was given an impressive grade grade of B+ in our long-term care category. With this score, the nursing home wrapped up a first-rate profile. Long-term care grades of this caliber generally require both around the clock care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine medical care. Once we looked at the volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we next considered the nursing home's vaccination statistics. This nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its patients against pneumonia, which is much higher than the vast majority of nursing homes. Clearly, this facility is doing something right in this area as it was able to keep its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had only 0.75 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.
