One of the reasons this turned out to be a great nursing home is that it earned an A+ short-term care grade. Our short-term care grades are arguably more important for patients requiring rehabilitation from their nursing home. Rehabilitation typically utilizes additional skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes not just nursing, but also physical and speech therapy, as well as other variations of therapy. This nursing home provides more services with physical therapists and registered nurses than most nursing homes we looked at. This is usually a favorable sign. The last item we looked at in this category is the percentage of residents who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We found that it performed as well as just about any facility in Kansas in this area with 68.2 percent of its patients returning home.

In addition, this facility excelled in inspections, where it received an A. Inspection ratings weigh several factors included in a facility's inspection report. One of the most important criteria we consider is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Facilities with higher grades in this category typically have very few severe deficiencies. While this nursing home had a few deficiencies on its report, none were major deficiencies based on CMS' scale. We should point out that deficiency-free inspection reports are uncommon in the industry.

Adding to this nursing home's list of strengths, it also received an excellent nursing grade. We awarded them an impressive grade of A- in this category. The nursing grade features many factors. The most heavily weighted one is the amount of time nurses spent with patients. This particular facility provided 4.4 hours of nursing care per resident each day. This was one of the more impressive figures we found. In addition, we found that a significant percentage of this care was provided by registered nurses, which are highly skilled nurses. These are both really impressive figures. In addition to providing impressive levels of care, this place also fared well in several of the quality measures we looked at. By way of illustration, in terms of the number of its patients suffering falls which lead to serious injury, this place outpaced the national average. This is often a good indicator that a place has reliable quality controls in place. Major falls can typically be avoided if more nurses aids and better safety protocols are in place.

The next area we rated is long-term care, which turned out to be this facility's weakest category. We gave this facility a grade of D in this area. However, we wouldn't assess this nursing home based only on one bad category, as it received a few superb scores in other areas. When facilities receive a score in this range in long-term care it typically means the nursing home didn't perform well in our measures relating to patient care. This facility's vaccination records weren't as favorable some of the other data points in this area, such as its nursing hours data. This nursing home administered the pneumonia vaccine to just 89.61039 percent of its patients. We'd love to see some improvement in this area next year. Lastly, we looked at the nursing home's number of hospitalizations. Here we found that this place fared poorly with 3.36 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. Sadly, this statistic is nearly twice the national average.
