Although we gave this facility a terrible overall score, we gave it a grade of C for short-term care. In computing our short-term care ratings, we look at a nursing home's levels of highly skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists occupational therapists and other types of therapists. This grade is more often than not a useful measure of a nursing home's rehabilitation. Unfortunately, we found that this facility provided fewer registered nurse and physical therapist hours per resident than most other nursing homes. Finally, we considered the percentage of patients who were able to return to the community from this facility. This proved to be more of a strength for this facility. In fact, we found that it outperformed the majority of facilities in the nation with 52.4 percent of its residents returning home. This is a higher rate than most nursing homes.

This facility really didn't perform horribly in the category of inspections. We awarded it a C for that category. Other aspects of its profile turned out to be the source of its rock bottom overall grade. We would argue that one of the most important factors in evaluating an inspection report is deficiencies. We especially look at the severity of the deficiencies. This facility had 2 deficiencies on its government inspection report, but none were in categories G through L. This indicates that this facility avoided the more significant classes of deficiencies. Finally, CMS flagged this nursing home for possible abuse or neglect. This is not what you want to see. We advise you to direct your search elsewhere.

We were also stunned to learn that this facility received a decent long-term care score in our assessment. We gave it a grade of C in this area. In the category of long-term care, we look at the amount of care offered by a facility, as opposed to more healthcare-oriented services. One of the criteria we considered after nurse's aid hours was vaccines. Fortunately, this facility administered the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its patients. Finally, we looked at the nursing home's number of hospitalizations. We found that this place had 2.84 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. Although this figure is quite a bit higher than the national average, this statistic may be skewed for some nursing homes based on the preexisting medical conditions of residents.

The last area we assessed is nursing. Sadly, it received an abysmal F in this area, which is an abysmal grade. The nursing grade weighs a handful of factors, however, the main one is the number of nurse hours spent with patients. This particular nursing home averaged just 3.3 hours of nursing care per patient on a daily basis. This figure is far below average. To pair with its subpar totals in the area of nursing hours per resident, this place also didn't fare as well in the quality-based measures we looked at in determining our nursing grades. We looked at the percent of patients experiencing major falls and pressure ulcers. This nursing home had more falls and pressure ulcers than the average nursing home.
