Facility Inspections
In addition to receiving a great overall score, this facility fared even better in our inspections category which is associated with the nursing home's recent government inspections. In fact, we gave it a grade of A+ for this area, which is one of our best scores. Arguably the most significant factor we look at in computing our inspection ratings is deficiencies. These deficiencies can be found on a facility's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes with higher scores in this area most likely avoided the more severe deficiencies involving health risks or even death. While this facility had some deficiencies on its government inspection report, none were serious based on CMS' deficiency scale. The fact that none of the deficiencies were severe made us feel better about this inspection report.
Short-term Care Quality
This nursing home also received a strong short-term care score. Indeed, we gave it an above average grade of B+ in this category. Short-term care grades are typically used to assess a facility's performance with rehabilitation. In order to provide highly graded rehabilitation services, nursing homes generally need to offer better levels of highly skilled nursing. These types of services include registered nurses, physical therapists, respiratory therapists and other highly trained professionals. This nursing home employs both physical therapists and registered nurses. Not all facilities employ these skilled professionals. Finally, we assessed the number of patients who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. This proved to be a real strength for this nursing home. This place outperformed the vast majority of nursing homes in the country in this area with 58.1 percent of its residents returning home.
Long-term Care Quality
This nursing home also was given an impressive long-term care grade. In fact, we awarded it an above average grade of B in this category. When nursing homes receive a score in this range in long-term care it generally means it's well-staffed and is a quality place to live on a permanent basis. Once we concluded our assessment of the amount of care provided by nurses, we next considered the facility's vaccination statistics. This facility vaccinated 99.73475 percent of its residents against pneumonia, which is an impressive figure. Pneumonia is often a life or death ailment for nursing home residents so we strongly prefer when a nursing home does not leave this to chance. Lastly, this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. With only 1 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, this nursing home had less hospitalizations than the average nursing home.
Nurse Quality
The last area we rated was nursing. We gave this nursing home a C in this category. Our nursing score is based on several data points, however, the primary consideration is the level of nurse hours per patient per week. According to its staffing data, this facility provided an average of 3.9 hours of nursing care per patient per day, which was above average. Finally, our nursing grades also factor in some quality-focused statistics. Specifically, we look at the percent of residents who sustained pressure ulcers and major falls. We view these statistics as predictive measures of the quality of nursing care, since better care tends to reduce these problems.
