Facility Inspections
This nursing home earned a solid overall grade as described above, but we really wanted to point out its excellent government inspection reports in recent years. We gave them an A in this category. Inspection scores account for a host of factors included in a facility's inspection reports. One of the most important criteria we weigh heavily is the number and severity of deficiencies. Facilities with higher scores in this area generally have very few severe deficiencies. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
Turning to another strength for this nursing home, we awarded it a very strong long-term care grade. In fact, we awarded this facility a grade of A-. Facilities that do well in long-term care typically provide residents with more supervision and stay on top of routine medical care. Once we concluded our assessment of the volume of nursing care, we then looked at the facility's vaccination records. This nursing home vaccinated 97.652916 percent of its residents against pneumonia, which is what we like to see. Pneumonia sadly can be a life threatening condition for nursing home patients so we like it when a nursing home doesn't leave this to chance. Lastly, we looked at the facility's number of hospitalizations. While it had 2.19 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, its risk adjusted statistic was middle of the road since it had more complex patients.
Nurse Quality
One of this facility's better category grades was in the area of nursing care. In that area, we gave this facility a grade of C. Our nursing grade focuses on the nursing home's nurse staffing levels. We consider both the levels of licensure of the nurses as well as the number of hours spent with residents. This nursing home provided just 2.9 hours of nursing care per patient each day. This figure is significantly below average. Finally, despite not having the highest total nursing hours, this nursing home actually performed admirably in the area of preventing major falls. This is typically a good indicator that a place has sufficient quality controls in place.
Short-term Care Quality
Switching gears to our last category, this facility didn't fare very well. With a rock bottom grade of F in short-term care, this is its poorest category. In determining our short-term care scores, we look at a facility's levels of highly skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists occupational therapists and other highly skilled individuals. This rating is typically a meaningful assessment of the nursing home's rehabilitation services. In this nursing home's case, it looks like it offers less physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than the typical facility. Lastly, we considered the percentage of residents that ultimately were able to return home from this nursing home. This nursing home didn't fare well here either. In fact, we found that just 26.5 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home. This figure was well off the national average.
