Facility Inspections
To go along with its strong overall score, we gave this nursing home an A for our inspections rating. Perhaps the most critical factor we look at in determining our inspection grades is deficiencies. These deficiencies can be found on a facility's inspection reports. Nursing homes with higher scores in this area typically dodged the more severe deficiencies involving things like patient abuse. This place received 4 deficiencies on its inspection report, but none of the deficiencies were considered to be severe. This indicates that the inspectors didn't consider any of these deficiencies an immediate risk to resident health or safety. The fact that none of the deficiencies were severe leaves us less concerned with this inspection report.
Short-term Care Quality
This facility is also strong in the area of short-term care, where it was awarded a grade of B+. It outpaced most facilities in this area. In computing our short-term care grades, we scrutinize a nursing home's levels of highly skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists respiratory therapists and other licensed professionals. This grade is considered to be a useful assessment of the nursing home's ability to rehabilitate patients. We were impressed to learn that this facility offers its residents measurably more hours of physical therapy than most other facilities. The final statistic we looked at in this category is the percentage of patients who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We found that it performed as well as just about any nursing home in Texas in this area with 59.8 percent of its patients returning home. For most nursing homes, fewer than half of their short-stay residents are able to return home.
Long-term Care Quality
This nursing home was given a favorable long-term care score as well. We gave it one of our better scores in that category with a grade of B. When facilities receive this kind of grade in long-term care it is typically a good sign for patient care and suggests that the place is well-staffed with nurses and aids. After assessing the quantity of care provided by nurses and other staff, we then analyzed the facility's vaccination statistics. This nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its patients against pneumonia, which is much higher than the majority of nursing homes. The last datapoint we looked at is its hospitalization rate. We found that this place had 1.76 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is middle of the pack in this area.
Nurse Quality
The final category we looked at is nursing. We gave it a B- in that category. This is not a bad grade in this area. The nursing grade weighs quite a few data points, most of which are based on levels of nurse staffing. This facility provided 3.5 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Lastly, we also looked at some nursing quality-based metrics in computing our nursing ratings. This place performed well when it comes to minimizing its residents' major falls and pressure ulcers. We consider these to be accurate indicators of the quality of nursing care.
