Facility Inspections

Grade: A-plus

One of the many reasons this turned out to be a quality nursing home is that it received an A+ inspection grade. This is simply as good as it gets in this critical category. These inspection ratings weigh several factors, including deficiencies, substantiated complaints and federal fines. You can find more information about each of these items by obtaining copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. While this facility had some minor dings on its government inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones found in categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This tells you the inspectors did not deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: A-plus

This facility also received an A+ long-term care grade, rendering it one of the few facilities to receive more than one A+ category scores. When nursing homes receive this kind of score in long-term care it is typically a good sign for patient care and suggests that the place is well-staffed with nurses and aids. On top of assessing the amount of care provided by aids and other staff, we looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility provided the vaccine to 100 percent of its patients, which is very impressive. Pneumonia can be a deadly illness for nursing home patients so we strongly prefer when a nursing home does not roll the dice on this issue. This nursing home was also able to keep its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had only 1.3 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a significantly lower hospitalization rate than most nursing homes.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: B-plus

This facility was given a favorable short-term care grade as well. We awarded it one of our higher grades in that area with a grade of B+. In determining our short-term care grades, we assess the facility's levels of skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists respiratory therapists and other types of therapists. This grade is more often than not a fair assessment of the facility's ability to rehabilitate patients. We were pleased to find that this nursing home employs both registered nurses and physical therapists. The same can't be said for all nursing homes. Finally, we looked at the percentage of patients who who were able to eventually return home from this nursing home. It fared as well as just about any nursing home in the nation with 60.1 percent of its residents returning home. Most facilities are below 50 percent in this statistic.

Nurse Quality

Grade: B-plus

In the final category, we awarded this facility a grade of A+ for our nursing rating. This rounded out a very favorable profile. Our nursing rating assesses quite a few factors, however, the main one is the level of nurse hours per patient per week. This nursing home averages 3.8 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Lastly, our nursing grades also factor in quality-based assessments, such as avoiding major falls. This place performed better than average in this area. This is often a good indicator that a facility has reliable quality controls in place. Major falls can often be avoided if more nurses aids and better safety protocols are in place.
