Facility Inspections
In addition to being a respectable facility overall, this place really excelled in the area of inspections, where it received a grade of A+. Few facilities performed better in this area. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in calculating these inspection ratings. One critical factor is health deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of deficiencies is usually more meaningful than the number of deficiencies, as some deficiencies can be quite minor. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is always a good sign.
Long-term Care Quality
Another one of this facility's more favorable category grades came in the area of long-term care. In that area, we awarded this facility a grade of B. It actually outpaced most nursing homes in this category. Nursing homes that receive this type of score in long-term care tend to provide consistent 24/7 care to ensure residents are well cared for. After looking at the volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we then looked at the facility's vaccination data. This facility vaccinated 55.76208 percent of its patients against pneumonia, which happens to be slightly below what we expected but still a decent percentage. Although its vaccination rate was a bit lower than we like to see, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. Indeed, it had only 0.95 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.
Short-term Care Quality
Sadly, this nursing home only earned a D for its short-term care grade, which is not one of our better scores. In the area of short-term care, we strive to qualify indicators of a facility's rehabilitation. We analyze the facility's skilled nursing services, such as the ones performed by registered nurses and physical therapists. With its score in this category, we weren't surprised to find that this place is well below average in terms of the quantity of registered nurse and physical therapy hours offered to its patients based on the measures we looked at. Finally, we looked at the percentage of residents who were able to return home from this facility. This was not a strength either for this facility. We found that just 45.3 percent of this nursing home's residents returned home. At most nursing homes, around half of their patients are able to return home so this is below average.
Nurse Quality
The last category we looked at was nursing, which is this facility's least impressive category. We awarded this nursing home a D in this category. Nursing ratings are based largely on levels of nurse staffing. This particular nursing home provided 3.5 hours of nursing care per resident per day, which is below average. In addition to receiving below average marks for total nursing hours, this facility was a bit less impressive in some of the quality-based metrics we looked at in computing our nursing scores. We looked at the percentage of residents experiencing pressure ulcers and found this facility was at approximately 150 percent of the national average in this statistic. This is a bad sign when you consider that so many pressure ulcers are preventable with better nursing care. This statistic really pulled down this nursing home's nursing grade substantially.
