Long-term Care Quality
We also found that this facility excelled in our long-term care rating. We awarded them an impressive grade of A+ in this category. When nursing homes receive this kind of grade in long-term care it is a good sign for patient care and indicates that the nursing home is well-staffed with nurses and aids. In addition to considering the well above average quantity of care provided by nurses and other staff at this facility, we also were pleased by the facility's vaccination data. By way of example, this nursing home provided the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its patients, which is what we like to see. The last datapoint we looked at was the facility's hospitalization rate. We found that this facility had 2.83 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. While this admittedly wasn't as impressive as some of its other scores in this category, this figure may be skewed for some nursing homes based on some of the medical complexity of patients.
Facility Inspections
This facility also earned an A+ inspection score, making it one of the rare places to receive multiple A+'s in our category grades. This score is based on the nursing home's government inspections. An A+ in this category is one of the best complements we can pay to a nursing home. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in calculating our inspection grades. One key factor is deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of these deficiencies is arguably more meaningful than the quantity of deficiencies, as some deficiencies can be quite minor. While this facility had a few deficiencies on its inspection report, none of them were severe based on CMS' deficiency scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Nurse Quality
Another strong feature for this facility is that it received an impressive nursing grade. In that area, we awarded this facility a grade of B+. There are numerous datapoints included in this area. Many of these datapoints reflect the quantity and quality of nurse staffing. This particular nursing home provided 4.1 hours of nursing care per resident per day, which was among the highest totals we found. Lastly, we also looked at nursing quality-based metrics in determining our nursing grades. These include minimizing residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. We look at these statistics as good indicators of the quality of nursing care provided, since better care tends to reduce these problems.
Short-term Care Quality
The last area we looked at was short-term care. In that area, we awarded this nursing home an impressive grade of B. In the area of short-term care, we strive to assess measures of a facility's rehabilitation. We analyze the nursing home's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses and physical, occupational and other therapists. We were pleased to find that this nursing home employs both registered nurses and physical therapists. The same can't be said for all nursing homes. The final statistic we assessed in this area is the percentage of residents who were able to leave the facility and return to the community. We discovered that 35.1 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home.
