In addition to being a respectable facility overall, this place really excelled in the area of inspections, where it received an A+. Few facilities performed better in this area. Perhaps the most important factor we consider in determining our inspection scores is deficiencies. Deficiencies are found on a nursing home's inspection reports. Facilities with higher grades in this category typically avoided the most severe deficiencies involving things like patient abuse. Fortunately, although this place had some minor dings on its report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones labeled as categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This tells you the inspectors didn't deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. A few minor deficiencies should not lead you to cross a nursing home off your list.

This facility also was awarded an impressive long-term care score. In fact, we gave them a grade of B in this area, which happens to be one of our better. When nursing homes receive a score in this range in long-term care it typically means it's well-staffed and is an overall good place to live on a permanent basis. In addition to assessing the quantity of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we looked at the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This nursing home provided the vaccine to 100 percent of its patients, which is very impressive. Pneumonia is often a life threatening illness for nursing home patients so we like it when a facility does not roll the dice on this issue. The last datapoint we looked at was its hospitalization rate. We found that this facility had 2.08 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days.

Another strength of this nursing home is its favorable grade in nursing. We gave them one of our better scores in that area, with a score of D. We looked at the levels of nurses at the facility, as well as the quantity of time those nurses spent with patients, in calculating our grade in this area. This nursing home averages 3.7 hours of nursing care per resident per day, which is below the national average. Finally, we also looked at a few quality-based metrics in determining our nursing ratings. This place was above average in two of the datapoints we considered, with good marks for avoiding pressure ulcers and major falls.

This facility's weakest area is short-term care, which is the last area we looked at. In this category, we awarded this facility a grade of just D. Our short-term care scores are likely more critical for patients in need of rehabilitation services. Rehabilitation usually requires higher levels of highly-skilled nursing. This means not merely nursing services, but also physical and speech therapy, as well as other variations of therapy. As you might expect, we discovered that this place provides significantly less physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than the average nursing home. Finally, we looked at the percentage of patients who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. This wasn't a strength for this facility. We found that just 26 percent of this nursing home's patients returned home. At most nursing homes, about half of their patients are able to return home so this is well below average.
