Facility Inspections

Grade: A-minus

This facility earned a solid overall grade as described above, but we really wanted to point out its excellent inspections in recent years. We gave them an impressive grade of A- in this category. These inspection scores take several factors into consideration, including deficiencies and federal fines. You can find more information about each of these items by obtaining copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. Although this nursing home had a few deficiencies on its government inspection report, none of them were severe based on CMS' deficiency scale. A couple of minor deficiencies should not lead you to cross a nursing home off your list.

Nurse Quality

Grade: B-minus

This facility performed well in nursing. In fact, we awarded it an B- for that category, which is one of our highest grades. There are several subcategories included in this grade. Most of the factors reflect the quantity and quality of nurse staffing. This nursing home provides 0.3 hours of nursing care per patient daily. This is a lower figure than we were hoping for. Lastly, we also looked at some nursing quality-based metrics. Although this place got dinged a bit for nursing hours, it excelled in some of these quality-based metrics. With fewer than five percent of its patients sustaining pressure ulcers, it fared well in this subcategory. This is often an indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can typically be avoided by offering better nursing care, such as by having a policy of moving residents more often.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: C

This facilities third best area was long-term care. We awarded it a C in this category. This is basically a middle of the road grade in this area. If you are looking for services other than rehabilitation, you should take a close look at each nursing home's long-term care ratings. One of the statistics we considered in addition to nursing hours is vaccines. Fortunately, this facility provided the pneumonia vaccine to 96.91358 percent of its patients. Lastly, this place was also able to limit hospitalizations. It had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: F

The final area we looked at is short-term care. We gave it a lowly F in this area, which is a bottom of the barrel grade. This is clearly a significant concern. In determining our short-term care scores, we quantify the facility's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. Our purpose is to formulate a scale for comparing the rehabilitation services of nursing homes. Not surprisingly, we found that this nursing home provides far less physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than the average facility. Lastly, we assessed the percentage of residents who eventually returned home from this nursing home. This facility didn't fare well here either. In fact, we found that just 5 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home.
