Nurse Quality
We also wanted to emphasize the fact that this facility excelled in our nursing rating. We awarded them an impressive grade of A+ in this category. There are many criteria included in this grade. Most of the subcategories reflect the quantity of nurse staffing. This nursing home provided 4.8 hours of nursing care per resident on a daily basis, which is among the highest totals in the country. A significant percentage of those hours were provided by registered nurses, which are one of the most skilled levels of nurses. We were really impressed by these figures. On top of providing impressive levels of nursing care, this nursing home also excelled in the quality measures we looked at. For example, it performed as well as any facility in California in the area of avoiding pressure ulcers and major falls. We view these statistics as predictive measures of the quality of nursing care being provided.
Short-term Care Quality
Contributing to its high-end resume, this facility also was awarded an excellent short-term care score, with a score of A. In computing these short-term care grades, we analyze the facility's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. Our goal is to create a barometer for comparing the rehabilitation services of various facilities. One of this place's strengths is registered nurse hours. We found that it offers more care from registered nurses to its patients than most nursing homes. The final measure we assessed in this category is the percentage of residents who ultimately returned home from the nursing home. This place performed better than most nursing homes in this area with 49.7 percent of its patients returning home.
Facility Inspections
We gave this facility an impressive grade of A for inspections. Inspection ratings are tied to several pieces of information found on the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes that excel in this area tend to have few deficiencies on their reports. Most importantly, these places should not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with risks to patient safety. Although this nursing home had a few deficiencies on its report, none of them were serious based on CMS' scale. We should note that deficiency-free inspection reports are uncommon in the industry.
Long-term Care Quality
The next category we rated was long-term care, where this nursing home was given a grade of B. This actually is this nursing home's worst category. A facility is doing something right when their weakest grade still is better than most other facilities. Long-term care ratings of this caliber generally require both around the clock care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine medical care. After considering the very impressive nursing care provided by this nursing home, we then looked at the facility's vaccination statistics. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its residents against pneumonia, which is far higher than most nursing homes. This combination proved to be successful as this nursing home was able to keep its residents out of the hospital. In fact, it had only 0.47 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.
