Short-term Care Quality
This facility received a strong overall score as described above, but we especially wanted to note its excellent short-term care grade. We gave them an A in this category. In calculating our short-term care ratings, we quantify the facility's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists and other types of therapists. The goal is to create a scale for sizing up the rehabilitation services of various nursing homes. This nursing home is above the national average both in terms of its quantity of physical therapy and registered nurse hours provided to its residents. These are generally good indicators of quality short-term care. Lastly, we looked at the number of patients that eventually returned home from this facility. On top of excelling in the area of physical therapy hours, we found that it performed as well as just about any facility in the country with 65.9 percent of its patients returning home.
Facility Inspections
This nursing home also excelled in the area of inspections. We gave it a grade of A- for that area, which is one of our highest grades. This is one of the few nursing homes with an overall grade in this range which earned multiple category grades this high. Inspection grades weigh several factors included in a facility's inspection report. One key criteria we rely on is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Facilities with higher scores in this category generally have few severe deficiencies. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Even some of the best nursing homes receive an occasional ding on their inspection report.
Nurse Quality
This facility's next best category grade came in the area of nursing. In that category, we gave this nursing home a grade of B-. This wasn't quite on par with some of its other category grades mentioned above. The nursing rating assesses many datapoints, but the paramount consideration is the level of nurse hours spent with patients. This nursing home provides 3.1 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a much lower figure than we are used to seeing. Finally, we also baked a few quality measures into our nursing scores. This facility was subpar in two of the major areas we look at, with below average scores for minimizing its residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. These areas are usually measures of the quality of nursing care available.
Long-term Care Quality
Turning to our final area, this nursing home was awarded an acceptable long-term care score of C. Our long-term care scores are more meaningful for patients in need of more traditional assistance associated with activities of daily living. After considering the amount of care provided by nurses and other staff, we turned to the facility's vaccination data. Frankly, we were a bit alarmed this nursing home vaccinated 57.905544 percent of its patients for pneumonia, which happens to be quite a few points lower than what we expected. Finally, we looked at the facility's number of hospitalizations. Here we found that this place had 2.28 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. Although this figure is quite a bit higher than the national average, this statistic may be skewed for some facilities based on the medical complexity of patients.
