Facility Inspections
One of the reasons this ended up being a strong nursing home is that it earned a very impressive inspection score. In fact, inspections is its best category grade. In this area, we awarded it an A+. Perhaps the most important factor we consider in calculating our inspection grades is deficiencies. Deficiencies can be found on a facility's inspection reports. Facilities with higher scores in this area most likely avoided the more severe deficiencies involving health risks or even death. Fortunately, although this nursing home had some minor dings on its government inspection report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are labeled as categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This means CMS did not consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. The fact that none of the deficiencies were severe made us feel better about this inspection report.
Long-term Care Quality
This facility truly excelled in the category of long-term care, where we awarded it a grade of A-. Few nursing homes performed better in this category. When facilities receive this kind of grade in long-term care it is a good sign for patient care and suggests that the nursing home is well-staffed with nurses and aids. One of the statistics we considered in addition to nursing hours was vaccinations. This nursing home administered the pneumonia vaccine to 98.669205 percent of its residents. This is a proven method to avoid negative health outcomes for the aged 65 and up population. Clearly, this nursing home is doing something right in this area as it also excelled at keeping its residents out of the hospital. It had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.

Nurse Quality
This nursing home's next best category was nursing. We awarded it a grade of B- in this category. While this wasn't quite as good as some of its other category grades, this isn't a bad score either. We analyzed the skill-level of nurses working for the facility, as well as the number of hours those nurses worked with patients, in computing our score in this category. This nursing home provided just 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident on a daily basis. This is a low total compared with most facilities. Lastly, although this place got dinged a bit for its nursing hours, it excelled in some of our quality-based metrics. With fewer than five percent of its patients experiencing pressure ulcers, it performed remarkably well in this subcategory.
Short-term Care Quality
Turning to our last area, we awarded this facility a D in our short-term care category. This is the nursing home's worst category score. Of course, this category hurt the facility's overall grade to some degree. Short-term care ratings are vital for individuals looking for rehabilitation. Rehabilitation generally mandates additional skilled nursing. This means a broad spectrum of nursing services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and respiratory therapists, as well as other variations of therapy. Unfortunately, we discovered that this facility offers fewer registered nurse and physical therapist hours per resident than most other facilities. Finally, we considered the percentage of patients who ultimately were able to return home from this nursing home. This facility didn't fare well here either. In fact, we found that just 3.3 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home. This figure was quite a bit off the national average.
