Facility Inspections
The primary reason this nursing home received a decent overall score is its impeccable government inspections in recent years. We awarded it one of our higher scores in that category, with an A. This is a much better score than the facility's overall grade, which was decent but not in the elite range. These inspection ratings take several factors into consideration, including deficiencies and federal fines. You can find more information about each of these factors by obtaining copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. Fortunately, although this place had a few minor dings on its inspection report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones labeled as categories G through L. This means that the inspectors did not deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. We should point out that deficiency-free inspection reports are rare in the industry.
Nurse Quality
One of the other reasons we rated this nursing home so highly is that it received a very impressive nursing rating. In that category, we awarded this facility an A-. We assessed the levels of nurses at the nursing home, in addition to the quantity of time those nurses spent with patients, in computing our rating in this category. This facility provided 4.5 hours of nursing care per resident daily, which is among the more impressive figures in the country. A significant portion of those hours were provided by registered nurses, which are one of the more skilled levels of nurses. We were really impressed by these statistics. On top of offering impressive levels of nursing care, this nursing home was also above average in each of the major quality-based metrics we assessed in this category. It performed well in the area of minimizing its residents' pressure ulcers and major falls.
Short-term Care Quality
We also gave this nursing home a solid score in the area of short-term care, where it received a grade of B-. Short-term care scores are based on a facility's quantity of skilled highly skilled professionals. This includes a broad spectrum of services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and respiratory therapists, not to mention other forms of therapy. One reason for this facility's strong score in this category is that it provides more care with registered nurses to its residents than the average nursing home. The last metric we considered in this category is the percentage of patients that eventually returned home from the nursing home. We found that just 33.9 percent of this nursing home's residents returned home.
Long-term Care Quality
The next category we looked at is long-term care, ended up being this nursing home's weakest category. We awarded this nursing home a D in this area. This was one of just a few dings of a quality profile. In a long-term care setting, the primary objective is to keep patients healthy and safe. This is different than skilled nursing or short-term care where the goal is to rehabilitate residents. Due to its grade in this category, we were pleasantly surprised to discover that this facility received good marks in both nursing hours and its vaccination records. In fact, this nursing home administered the pneumonia vaccine to 99.7807 percent of its patients. This percentage is actually higher than many nursing homes. To our surprise, this facility also fared well at keeping its residents out of the hospital. It had just 1.05 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days. Sadly, some of its other scores in this category were not as favorable as these.
