To go along with its decent overall grade, we gave this nursing home an A+ for our inspections rating. This is far more impressive than the facility's overall score. Inspection grades weigh several factors, including deficiencies and substantiated complaints. You can learn more about each of these factors by obtaining copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. While this facility had some deficiencies on its government inspection report, none of them were major deficiencies based on CMS' scale. Remember that deficiency-free inspection reports are uncommon in the industry.

We also gave this facility an impressive grade in long-term care. This nursing home received a grade of B in this category, which happens to be one of our more impressive scores. When nursing homes receive a score in this range in long-term care it generally means it has plenty of staff and is an overall good place to reside on a permanent basis. In addition to looking at the elite level of care provided by nurses aids and other staff at this nursing home, we also were impressed by the facility's record for vaccinations. This facility provided the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its residents, which is very impressive. Finally, this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. In fact, it had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.

The third area we looked at was short-term care. In that area, we awarded this nursing home a B-. Our short-term care grade is often used to gauge a nursing home's performance with rehabilitation In order to provide good rehabilitation services, nursing homes generally need to have better levels of skilled nursing services. These types of services include registered nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists and other types of therapists. One of this nursing home's strengths is registered nurse hours. We found that it offers more care from registered nurses to its residents than most facilities. The final metric we looked at in this category is the number of residents who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We found that it performed well in this metric with 57.4 percent of its residents returning home. Unfortunately, at most nursing homes, fewer than half of their short-stay residents are able to return home.

The final area we rated is nursing. We awarded this nursing home a D for nursing, leaving this as the facility's least impressive area. The nursing score is based on quite a few components, but the most important one is the number of nurse hours per patient per week. Quantity of nursing care is not the problem here with this nursing home's grade. This facility actually provides an above average 5.3 hours of nursing care per patient per day. Despite performing well in terms of nursing hours, this facility was a bit less impressive in some of the quality-based measures we looked at in determining our nursing ratings. We looked at the percent of residents sustaining pressure ulcers and found that this facility was at roughly 150 percent of the national average in this statistic. This is likely a bad sign when you consider that many bed sores are believed to be preventable with better nursing care. Unfortunately, this statistic pulled down this facility's nursing grade substantially.
