The primary reason this nursing home received a decent overall grade is its excellent inspections in recent years. We gave it one of our better grades in that area, with an A. This is a notably better score than the place's overall grade, which was decent but certainly not elite. Our inspection ratings account for a host of factors included in a nursing home's inspection reports. One of the most important criteria we weigh heavily is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Nursing homes with higher grades in this area tend to have few severe deficiencies. While this facility had a few minor dings on its government inspection report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are those labeled as categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This means that the inspectors didn't consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. We should point out that deficiency-free inspection reports are rare in the industry.

We also wanted to point out that this facility was awarded a strong short-term care score. In fact, it received one of our most favorable grades in that category with a score of A-. In our short-term care category, we attempt to create a meaningful measure for rehabilitation services. In doing so, we analyze the facility's scope of skilled nursing services, including both registered nurses and physical therapy, as well as speech therapy. We were pleased to find that this nursing home employs both registered nurses and physical therapists. The same can't be said for all nursing homes. The final item we assessed in this category is the number of residents that eventually returned home from the facility. This turned out to be more of a strength for this facility. We found that it performed as well as just about any nursing home in Florida with 64.1 percent of its residents returning home. Unfortunately, at most facilities, less than half of their short-stay residents ever return home.

This facility was given its next best category grade in the category of long-term care. We gave this facility a grade of C in this area, which is a decent score. Our long-term care grades are more critical for those requiring more traditional assistance related to activities of daily living. On top of assessing the volume of care provided by nurses and other staff, we looked at the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility gave the vaccine to 97.61273 percent of its patients. Lastly, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. With only 1.51 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, this facility has fewer hospitalizations than the majority of nursing homes.

The last area we scored was nursing. This nursing home received a grade of C for this area. Our nursing grade analyzes many factors, but the most important consideration is the level of nurse hours per patient per week. This particular nursing home provided 3.8 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Lastly, our nursing grade also includes applicable quality-based metrics. While this facility excelled in terms of quantity of nursing hours, it fell short in some of the data points that related to quality. This facility's nursing rating was pulled down by its subpar performance in the area of minimizing pressure ulcers. We found that 14.2 percent of this facility's residents sustained pressure ulcers. Since many pressure ulcers can be avoided with good nursing protocols, we reduce a nursing home's nursing score when we find this kind of prevalence of pressure ulcers.
