Facility Inspections
One of the many reasons this turned out to be a quality nursing home is that it received an A+ inspection grade. This is simply as good as it gets in this critical category. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in computing these inspection grades. One of those factors is health deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of the deficiencies is arguably more important than the quantity of deficiencies, as some of these are quite minor. This nursing home was hit with 3 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none were considered to be severe. This means that the inspectors didn't deem any of the deficiencies to create an immediate risk to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Nurse Quality
One of the other reasons we rated this nursing home so highly is that it earned a very impressive nursing rating. In that area, we awarded this facility an A-. Our nursing grade assesses the facility's level of nurse staffing. We consider both the levels of licensure of the nurses as well as the number of hours spent with patients. This facility boasts an impressive 4 hours of nursing care per patient on a daily basis, of which more than an hour of those were provided by registered nurses. This is one of the most highly skilled levels of nurses. Finally, we also looked at nursing quality-based metrics in determining our nursing grades. These include minimizing residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. We look at these areas as good measures of the quality of nursing care offered, since better care tends to reduce these problems.
Long-term Care Quality
The third area we analyzed was long-term care. This nursing home was awarded an above average long-term care grade, with a grade of B+ in this area. In a long-term care setting, the facility's primary goal is to keep patients as healthy and safe as possible. This is different than skilled nursing or short-term care where the goal is to rehabilitate patients. While we determined this nursing home had an impressive quantity of nursing care provided by nurses aids and other nursing staff, we found its vaccination rate to be somewhat lower than we expected. This facility gave the pneumonia vaccine to just 89.31297 percent of its patients. This is one statistic we'd love to see this nursing home improve on. Clearly, this place is doing something right in this area as it was able to keep its residents out of the hospital. In fact, it had only 0.61 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.
Short-term Care Quality
Turning to our next area, this facility also performed well in the short-term care category. We gave it a B+ in that area. This wrapped up a first-rate profile. In the area of short-term care, we seek to assess indicators of a facility's rehabilitation services. We assess the nursing home's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses and physical, occupational and other therapists. One reason for this facility's strong score in this category is that it provides more care with registered nurses to its residents than the average nursing home. Lastly, we assessed the percentage of patients who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. We found that 40.9 percent of this nursing home's residents returned home.
