Nurse Quality

Grade: A

This nursing home received a strong overall grade as described above, but we especially wanted to emphasize its excellent nursing score. We gave them a grade of A in this category. In calculating our nursing grades, we factor in both staffing levels and the levels of licensure of the nurses. This place provided 3.3 hours of nursing care per resident on a daily basis. Roughly one-fourth of these hours were provided by registered nurses, which are among the most skilled nurses. This is an impressive ratio of skilled nursing care. We weight these hours performed by these types of nurses more in determining our nursing scores. Finally, we also looked at several nursing quality-based metrics and this facility excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any nursing home the nation in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can often be avoided by offering better nursing care, such as by employing a policy of moving a resident more often.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: B

In addition, this nursing home also received favorable long-term care scores in our assessment. Indeed, we awarded them one of our higher scores in that category, with a score of B. When nursing homes receive this kind of score in this category it is a good sign for resident care and suggests that the nursing home is well-staffed with nurses aids. Once we finished looking at the volume of nursing care, we next considered the nursing home's vaccination data. This nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its residents against pneumonia, which is what we like to see. Pneumonia can be a life or death illness for nursing home residents so we strongly prefer when a facility doesn't leave its residents vulnerable. Lastly, we looked at its number of hospitalizations. Here we found that this facility had 4.14 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. Although this admittedly wasn't as favorable as some of its other scores in this area, this number can be skewed for some nursing homes due to some of the preexisting medical conditions of patients.

Facility Inspections

Grade: B-minus

This facility earned a good score in the area of inspections as well. In fact, we awarded it a grade of B- for that category, which is one of our better scores. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in computing these inspection ratings. One critical factor is health deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of these deficiencies is arguably more important than the quantity of deficiencies, as some deficiencies end up being relatively minor. While this place had a few minor dings on its government inspection report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are those found in categories G through L. This means the government inspectors did not deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. We should note that deficiency-free inspections are uncommon in the industry.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: B-minus

The final area we rated was short-term care. We awarded it a grade of B- in this category. This is a decent grade in this category. Our short-term care ratings are meaningful for prospective residents in need of rehabilitation. Rehabilitation typically requires more skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes a vast spectrum of services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and occupational therapists, as well as other types of therapy. This nursing home elevated its grade in this category by offering more care from registered nurses to its residents than the average facility. The last measure we considered in this area is the percentage of patients who who were able to eventually return home from the nursing home. We found that just 38.9 percent of this nursing home's patients returned home. This figure is below average.
