Facility Inspections
In addition to receiving a great overall score, this facility fared even better in our inspections category which is associated with the nursing home's recent government inspections. In fact, we gave it a grade of A- for this area, which is one of our best scores. Arguably the most significant factor we look at in computing our inspection ratings is deficiencies. These deficiencies can be found on a facility's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes with higher scores in this area most likely avoided the more severe deficiencies involving health risks or even death. While this facility had some deficiencies on its government inspection report, none were serious based on CMS' deficiency scale. The fact that none of the deficiencies were severe made us feel better about this inspection report.
Nurse Quality
This nursing home performed well in our nursing category. In fact, we awarded it a grade of A- for that category, which is one of our highest scores. Our nursing rating is largely based on a facility's nurse staffing. This particular nursing home provided 4.6 hours of nursing care per patient per day, which was among the highest totals we found. Lastly, this place also excelled in the quality measures we assessed. It performed as well as any facility the country in terms of minimizing its residents' pressure ulcers and major falls.
Long-term Care Quality
Turning to the third category, this facility also received a grade of B+ for its long-term care rating. This is a well above average grade in this category. Long-term care ratings of this caliber generally require both 24/7 care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine medical care. On top of providing very favorable levels of nurse staffing, this facility gave the pneumonia vaccine to 99.672134 percent of its residents. This statistic is also far higher than most nursing homes. Finally, we looked at the facility's number of hospitalizations. We found that this facility had 2.28 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days.
Short-term Care Quality
The next category we scored is short-term care, where this nursing home was awarded a B. This facility ended up being very solid in each category we looked at. In calculating our short-term care ratings, we look at the nursing home's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, respiratory therapists, physical therapists and other types of therapists. Our goal is to create a barometer for sizing up the rehabilitation services of different nursing homes. Fortunately, it looks like this nursing home has registered nurses on staff. Not every nursing home employs these types of nurses. On the other hand, based on the data they provided, it does not look like the facility employs physical therapists. The last statistic we looked at in this category is the percentage of residents who were able to leave the facility and return home. It fared as well as just about any facility in California with 59.1 percent of its patients returning home. For most nursing homes, less than half of their short-stay patients are able to return home.
