These inspection grades weigh several factors, including deficiencies, substantiated complaints and federal fines. You can learn more about each of these items by reviewing copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. While this facility had some minor dings on its government inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are those found in categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This tells you that the government inspectors did not consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
One of the other reasons we rated this nursing home so well is that it received a dominant long-term care score. Indeed, long-term care is its second most impressive category score. In that area, we awarded this facility a grade of A. When nursing homes receive this kind of score in long-term care it is typically a good sign for patient care and indicates that the facility is well-staffed with nurses and aids. On top of looking at the elite quantity of care provided by nurses and other staff at this facility, we also were happy with the nursing home's vaccination record. By way of example, this nursing home administered the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its patients, which is an impressive figure. Finally, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. With only 1.11 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, this facility had less hospitalizations than the average nursing home.
Nurse Quality
Adding to this nursing home's list of strengths, it also received an excellent nursing grade. We awarded them an impressive grade of A- in this category. When computing our nursing ratings, we assess both nursing hours and the skill levels of those nurses. This place provided 4.6 hours of nursing care per patient daily. This is an impressive statistic which typically leads to quality care. Finally, this nursing home also performed well in several of the quality-based metrics we looked at. For example, in terms of the number of its residents suffering falls leading to serious injury, this facility performed as well as any facility in West Virginia. Avoiding major falls is typically a good indicator that a facility has reliable quality controls in place. Major falls can frequently be prevented if more nurses aids and better safety protocols are in place.
Short-term Care Quality
The next category we graded is short-term care, in which this facility was awarded a grade of C. This actually was this facility's worst area. This is nevertheless nothing to be ashamed of. Short-term care ratings are based on a nursing home's quantity of highly-skilled nursing services. This includes a vast spectrum of nursing services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and respiratory therapists, in addition to other variations of therapy. One reason for this facility's strong score in this category is that it provides more care with registered nurses to its residents than the average nursing home. Finally, we assessed the percentage of patients who were able to return to the community from this facility. We found that 22 percent of this nursing home's residents returned home. At most nursing homes, closer to half of their patients are able to return home so this place is below average.
