Facility Inspections
We also wanted to emphasize that this facility has received nearly flawless inspections in recent years. We gave them an A in this category. Perhaps the most important factor we consider in determining our inspection scores is deficiencies. These deficiencies can be found on a facility's recent inspection reports. Places with better grades in this area typically dodged the most severe deficiencies involving things like patient abuse. This facility received 2 deficiencies on its inspection report, but fortunately none of the deficiencies were considered to be severe deficiencies. This tells you that the inspectors didn't consider any of the deficiencies to pose an imminent risk to resident health or safety. The fact that the deficiencies were relatively minor made us feel better about this inspection report.
Short-term Care Quality
This facility also excelled in the category of short-term care, where we awarded it a grade of A. Not many facilities performed better in this category. Our short-term care grade is often used to assess a facility's performance with rehabilitation. To have quality rehabilitation services, nursing homes generally must have higher levels of highly skilled nursing. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, respiratory therapists and other highly skilled individuals. When we assessed this facility's nursing hours, we found it offered more care from registered nurses than most nursing homes. Finally, we assessed the number of patients who returned to the community from this facility. It outperformed the overwhelming majority of nursing homes in the nation with 60.6 percent of its residents returning home. This is a significantly higher rate than most nursing homes.
Nurse Quality
To complement its strong performance in other areas, we awarded this nursing home a grade of A for our inspections rating. The nursing score includes a host of factors. The most important variable is the amount of time nurses spend with patients. This nursing home provided 4.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day, which is among the more impressive figures in the country. A significant portion of those hours were provided by registered nurses, which are one of the most highly skilled levels of nurses. We were very impressed by these figures. In addition to offering high levels of care, this facility also fared well in some of the quality measures we looked at. In terms of the percentage of its patients suffering from pressure ulcers, this nursing home performed better than the national average.
Long-term Care Quality
The last category we graded is long-term care. This facility was awarded a better than average nursing grade in our assessment, with a B. Even though this wasn't quite as impressive as a few of its other category grades, this is nevertheless one of the better scores in this category. Long-term care ratings of this caliber generally require both 24/7 care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine medical care. On top of offering very favorable levels of nurse staffing, this facility administered the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its patients. This figure is also significantly higher than the average nursing home. This combination proved to be successful as this facility keeps its residents out of the hospital. In fact, it had only 0.81 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.
