Short-term Care Quality

Grade: A-minus

In addition to earning a strong overall score, this facility fared well in short-term care. We awarded it an A- for that category. In computing our short-term care grades, we look at a facility's levels of highly skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists occupational therapists and other licensed professionals. This rating is typically a solid measure of a facility's rehabilitation services. This nursing home elevated its grade in this category by offering more care from registered nurses to its residents than the average facility. The final measure we looked at in this category is the number of patients who were able to leave the facility and return to the community. We found that it performed as well as just about any nursing home in Michigan in this area with 59.6 percent of its residents returning home. For most nursing homes, fewer than half of their short-stay residents are able to return home.

Nurse Quality

Grade: A-minus

This facility received high grades in the area of nursing as well. In fact, it received one of our highest grades in that category with a score of A-. Our nursing rating looks at the facility's nurse staffing levels. We look at both the levels of licensure of the nurses as well as the amount of time spent with residents. This nursing home provides an impressive 4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, this place also performed well in several of the quality measures we looked at. In terms of the percentage of its residents suffering from pressure ulcers, this facility performed better than the national average.

Facility Inspections

Grade: B-plus

Turning to another of this nursing home's strengths, it also received a very impressive inspection score. Inspections proved to be one of its best category grades. In that category, we awarded this nursing home a grade of B+. Inspection scores account for several factors found on a facility's inspection reports. One of the most important criteria we rely on is the number and severity of deficiencies. Places with higher grades in this area usually have few of these severe deficiencies. Fortunately, although this nursing home had some minor dings on its inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are those found in categories G through L. This means the inspectors didn't consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. A couple minor deficiencies are not necessarily something to panic about.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: C

The last category we looked at is long-term care. We awarded this facility a C in this area. Long-term care grades assess a facility's assistance with daily living rather than the highly skilled nursing or medical services that are critical to a skilled nursing facility. On top of favorable nursing hour statistics, this nursing home's vaccination record is fairly strong also. Indeed, this facility vaccinated 99.56897 percent of its patients against pneumonia. This combination proved to be effective as this facility also excelled at keeping its residents out of the hospital. It had just 1.41 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days.
