Nurse Quality
We also wanted to emphasize the fact that this facility excelled in our nursing rating. We awarded them an impressive grade of A+ in this category. There are numerous subcategories included in this grade. Many of these datapoints reflect the quantity and quality of nurse staffing. This facility provided 5.8 hours of nursing care per resident daily. This was one of the highest totals we found. In addition, a significant percentage of this care was provided by registered nurses, which are highly skilled nurses. These are both really impressive figures. On top of offering high levels of care, this place also excelled in several of the quality-based metrics we assessed. With below five percent of its residents suffering from pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any place the country in this category. This is usually an indicator that a nursing home has reliable quality controls. Many pressure ulcers could be avoided by offering better nursing care and having a system of turning patients more frequently.
Long-term Care Quality
This nursing home also was given an A+ for its long-term care grade. Long-term care grades in this range generally require both around the clock care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine medical care. After assessing the impressive nursing care provided by this nursing home, we then looked at the nursing home's vaccination records. This nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its patients against pneumonia, which is much higher than the vast majority of nursing homes. Lastly, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. It had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.
Facility Inspections
Adding to an already impressive profile, this facility also received virtually flawless health inspections in recent years. As a result, we awarded it an A+ inspection grade. Arguably the most critical factor we consider in determining our inspection ratings is deficiencies. Deficiencies can be found on a facility's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes with better scores in this category typically avoided the more severe deficiencies involving things like patient abuse. This place was assessed 2 deficiencies on its inspection report, but fortunately none were considered to be severe deficiencies. This indicates that CMS did not consider any of the deficiencies to be an imminent threat to resident safety or health. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Short-term Care Quality
Moving on to our next category, this facility also excelled in the short-term care category. In fact, we awarded it an A for this category. This completed truly elite report card. Short-term care grades are typically used to measure a nursing home's performance with rehabilitation. In order to offer highly graded rehabilitation services, nursing homes generally must provide better levels of highly skilled nursing services. These types of services include registered nurses, physical therapists, respiratory therapists and other types of therapists. One of this nursing home's strengths is registered nurse hours. We found that it provides more care from registered nurses than most facilities. The last item we looked at in this category is the percentage of patients who were able to leave the nursing home and return home. We found that it was above average in this area with 55.1 percent of its residents returning home.
