Short-term Care Quality
Although we graded this facility incredibly poorly overall, it received a decent short-term care grade this year. We gave it a C in that category, which was the closest thing to a bright spot we can find for this nursing home. In computing our short-term care grades, we quantify the facility's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, speech therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. The objective is to devise a scale for comparing the rehabilitation services of various nursing homes. In this facility's case, we were surprised to learn that it actually provides less registered nurse and physical therapist hours per patient than the typical facility. The hope is always that this does not adversely affect the quality of care. The last datapoint we considered in this area is the number of patients that returned home from the facility. This nursing home performed better in this statistic. We found that it performed better than most facilities in this area with 55.1 percent of its residents returning home.
Facility Inspections
Sadly, this facility's next best category was inspections, but even there it earned a D. This is still a well below average grade. Inspection scores account for several factors included in a facility's inspection report. You should be most cautious when considering a facility that has severe deficiencies on a recent inspection report. This nursing home was hit with one deficiency by government inspectors. Fortunately, it was not in one of the categories that suggest that it created a threat to patient safety or health. Lastly, we also would like to draw your attention to the fact that this place was assessed large government fines in recent years in excess of $50,000. This usually signifies that inspectors became frustrated after several years of bad inspections.
Nurse Quality
Among this nursing home's several poor grades was its F in the area of nursing care. Our nursing grade is mostly associated with the facility's level of nurse staffing. This facility provided just 3.2 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a very low total compared to most nursing homes. Unfortunately, this facility also had terrible marks in some of the quality-based metrics to pair with its weak nursing hours. We looked at the percentage of residents sustaining pressure ulcers and we were disappointed. This nursing home was at approximately 150 percent of the national average in this metric.
Long-term Care Quality
The next area we graded is long-term care, where this facility was given a bottom of the barrel grade in this area also. It received an abysmal F for this area, which is obviously a major disappointment. Long-term care scores in this range generally are a bad sign for the quantity and quality of care provided by nurses and aids, as well as the levels of routine medical care available. After considering the volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we next considered the facility's vaccination record. We were a bit bothered by the fact that this facility vaccinated 83.045975 percent of its residents against pneumonia, which happens to be several points lower than what we expected. Unfortunately, its hospitalization rate was also a cause for concern. Here we found that this place had 2.56 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an alarming rate.
