This nursing home excelled in the category of long-term care, where it earned an A-. Facilities that excel in this category typically provide patients with more supervision and stay on top of routine healthcare services. Once we looked at the quantity of care provided by nurses and other staff, we then looked at the nursing home's vaccination records. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its residents against pneumonia. Vaccines are critical to keeping patients healthy. Clearly, this facility is doing something right in this area as it also excelled at keeping its residents out of the hospital. It had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.

We also wanted to emphasize this facility's nearly flawless inspections in recent years. We awarded them an impressive grade of B+ in this area. Arguably the most important factor we look at in computing our inspection scores is deficiencies. These deficiencies are found on a nursing home's inspection reports. Nursing homes with better scores in this area most likely avoided the more severe deficiencies involving health risks or even death. This place was assessed 5 deficiencies on its inspection report, but none were considered to be major deficiencies. This means that the government inspectors didn't consider any of these deficiencies to cause an imminent threat to resident safety or health. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is always a good sign.

We awarded this facility just a D for our short-term care grade. This is not a very good score. In the category of short-term care, we seek to evaluate measures of a nursing home's rehabilitation services. We look at the nursing home's skilled nursing services, including the ones performed by registered nurses and physical and occupational therapists. With a score in this range for this area, we weren't shocked to discover this place was well below average in many staffing areas we focus on. In fact, it provided substantially fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most other facilities. The final measure we looked at in this area is the number of residents who who were able to eventually return home from the facility. This nursing home struggled quite a bit in this metric as well, with just 0 percent of its residents returning home. Unfortunately, this was well below the national average.

The final category we scored was nursing. Sadly, it received an abysmal F in this category, which is a very poor grade. This is obviously a major disappointment. The nursing score consists of many factors, but the most important consideration is the level of nurse hours spent with patients. This particular facility provided just 0.2 hours of nursing care per patient each day. This number is quite a bit below the national average. Unfortunately, this nursing home also had terrible marks in some of the quality-based measures to pair with its low nursing hour totals. For starters, we looked at the percent of patients experiencing pressure ulcers. This facility was at more than double the national average in this statistic. This is alarming when you consider that so many pressure ulcers are believed to be preventable with better nursing care. This ended up sealing the facility's fate of earning a very poor nursing grade.
