Long-term Care Quality
On top of being a first rate facility overall, this facility also excelled in our long-term care category, where it received a grade of A. Nursing homes that receive this type of grade in long-term care tend to provide consistent around the clock care to make sure patients are kept in good health. After considering the significant amount of nursing care provided by this facility, we next considered the facility's vaccination statistics. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its patients for pneumonia, which is significantly higher than the average nursing home. Finally, we looked at its number of hospitalizations. While it had 2.71 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, its risk adjusted metric was close to the middle of the pack due to it having more complicated patients.
Short-term Care Quality
This facility also received a very strong short-term care grade. Indeed, this is its second strongest category score. In that category, this facility received a grade of A. In the category of short-term care, we endeavor to evaluate indicators of a nursing home's rehabilitation services. We analyze the nursing home's skilled nursing services, such as the ones performed by registered nurses and various therapists. This nursing home provides more services with physical therapists and registered nurses than most nursing homes we looked at. This is usually a favorable sign. The last item we assessed in this category is the number of patients that who were able to eventually return home from the nursing home. We found that it fared as well as just about any nursing home in Washington in this area with 71.3 percent of its residents returning home. Unfortunately, at most facilities, fewer than half of their short-term residents are able to return home.
Facility Inspections
Another impressive feature of this facility is its inspection grade. In that area, we awarded this facility a grade of A-. Our inspection grades are tied to several datapoints found on the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes that excel in this area have few deficiencies on their reports. Most importantly, these places generally do not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with risks to patient safety. While this nursing home had some deficiencies on its report, none were major deficiencies based on CMS' deficiency scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Nurse Quality
The last area we looked at was nursing. In that area, we gave this nursing home an impressive grade of B. Our nursing score is primarily associated with the nursing home's nurse staffing. This particular nursing home provided 5 hours of nursing care per resident daily, which was among the more impressive figures we found. Lastly, we also looked at nursing quality measures in determining our nursing ratings. These include minimizing residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. We view these metrics as good indicators of the quality of nursing care offered, since better care tends to reduce these problems.
