Facility Inspections
The main reason this ended up being a decent nursing home is that it earned an elite inspection score. In fact, its inspection score was far superior to its overall grade. In the inspections category, we gave this facility an A-. Inspection scores weigh several factors, including deficiencies and substantiated complaints. You can find more information about each of these items by obtaining copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. This nursing home was hit with 4 deficiencies on its inspection report, but fortunately none were considered to be severe deficiencies. This tells you that the inspectors did not deem any of the deficiencies to create an immediate risk to patient health or safety. A couple minor deficiencies should not lead you to cross a nursing home off your list.
Long-term Care Quality
This nursing home also was given an impressive grade in our long-term care category. We awarded this nursing home a better than average grade of B+ in that area. Long-term care scores of this caliber generally require both around the clock care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine medical care. In addition to considering the volume of care provided by aids and other staff, we also looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This facility gave the vaccine to 99.81917 percent of its residents, which is higher than most nursing homes. Lastly, we looked at the facility's number of hospitalizations. Here we found that this facility had 4.08 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days. While this admittedly wasn't as favorable as some of its other scores in this area, this number can be skewed for some facilities due to the medical complexity of residents.
Nurse Quality
Another strength of this nursing home is its favorable grade in nursing. We gave them one of our better scores in that area, with an D. When computing our nursing grades, we look at both the number of hours nurses spend with residents and the skill levels of those nurses. This particular nursing home provided 3.5 hours of nursing care per resident per day, which is below average. To go along with its below average total nursing hours per patient, this nursing home had really poor scores in some of the quality-based metrics we looked at in determining our nursing ratings. We looked at the percent of patients sustaining falls leading to major injury. This place was at more than 1.5 times the national average in this statistic. This is concerning in light of the fact that many falls could be prevented with better nursing care. This ended up sealing the nursing home's fate of receiving a poor nursing score.
Short-term Care Quality
The next category we scored was short-term care, which proved to be this facility's least impressive category. We gave it a lowly F in this category, which is clearly a major disappointment. Short-term care ratings are crucial for patients needing rehabilitation. Rehabilitation usually utilizes additional highly-skilled nursing. This includes a vast spectrum of services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and respiratory therapists, as well as other variations of therapy. Considering its grade in this area, we were not stunned to learn that this nursing home is well below average in terms of the number of registered nurse and physical therapy hours provided to its patients based on the data we looked at. The last statistic we considered in this category is the percentage of patients that who were able to eventually return home from the facility. This facility struggled quite a bit in this metric as well, with just 14.6 percent of its residents returning home. This was well below the national average.
