Once we concluded our assessment of the volume of nursing care, we then looked at the nursing home's vaccination record. This nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its residents for pneumonia, which is what we like to see. Pneumonia sadly is often a deadly ailment for nursing home residents so we prefer when a nursing home does not leave this to chance. Finally, this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. In fact, it had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

Adding to an already impressive profile, this facility also received virtually flawless health inspections in recent years. As a result, we awarded it an A+ inspection grade. Perhaps the most significant factor we look at in computing our inspection ratings is deficiencies. Deficiencies are found on a facility's recent inspection reports. Facilities with better scores in this area typically dodged the most severe deficiencies involving health risks or even death. Fortunately, although this place had a few minor dings on its government inspection report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are those labeled as categories G through L. This tells you that CMS did not deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Another reason we rated this nursing home so highly is that it received an A+ nursing grade. This is simply as good as it gets in this category. Our nursing score is mostly based on the nursing home's level of nurse staffing. This nursing home provides 0.5 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also assessed several nursing quality measures and this nursing home excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any facility Florida in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can generally be prevented by providing better nursing care, such as by having a policy of moving a resident more often.

In the final category we analyzed, this facility was awarded first-rate marks in the area of short-term care as well. Consequently, we awarded it an A+. This made it one of the few of nursing homes we awarded A+'s in all four categories. Our short-term care scores are important for people in need of rehabilitation. Rehabilitation usually mandates additional skilled nursing. Skilled nursing means a wide spectrum of services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and speech therapists, as well as other variations of therapy. Fortunately, it looks like this nursing home employs registered nurses. Not every nursing home employs these types of nurses. On the other hand, based on the data this nursing home provided, they do not appear to employ physical therapists. The last metric we considered in this category is the number of patients who were able to leave the facility and return home. We found that 6.8 percent of this nursing home's patients were able to return home.
