Although we didn't rate this facility favorably overall, we did give it an excellent score in the area of inspections, where it earned an A-. Inspection ratings weigh several factors, including deficiencies and substantiated complaints. You can find more information about each of these items by reviewing copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. While this nursing home had some minor dings on its government inspection report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are found in categories G through L. This tells you that the government inspectors didn't consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. A couple minor deficiencies aren't the end of the world.

We also awarded this nursing home a middle of the pack grade in the area of long-term care, with a grade of C. In determining our long-term care scores, we assess the personal care offered to the facility's residents. After assessing the quantity of care provided by nurses and other staff, we then looked at the nursing home's vaccination statistics. This nursing home vaccinated 98.27586 percent of its patients for pneumonia, which is better than the average nursing home. Lastly, we looked at the facility's number of hospitalizations. Although it had 2.66 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, its risk adjusted metric was not too bad.

The third category we looked at was short-term care. In that area, we awarded this facility a grade of C. In determining our short-term care ratings, we look at a facility's levels of skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists occupational therapists and other licensed professionals. This area is typically a fair measure of the facility's ability to rehabilitate patients. In this facility's case, we were surprised to learn that it actually provides less physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than the typical facility. Lastly, we assessed the percentage of residents who were able to return to the community from this facility. This proved to be more of a strength for this facility. In fact, we found that it outperformed the majority of nursing homes in the nation with 54.5 percent of its patients returning home.

The final category we graded was nursing, which turned out to be a weak link for this nursing home. We awarded this nursing home a grade of D for our nursing category. We analyzed the levels of nurses employed by the facility, as well as the quantity of hours those nurses spent with patients, in determining our grade in this category. This place averaged just 3.3 hours of nursing care per patient on a daily basis. This place also had abysmal marks in several of the quality-based metrics to pair with its weak nursing hour totals. We looked at the percentage of patients sustaining pressure ulcers. This facility was at more than double the national average in this metric. This is quite concerning when you consider that so many bed sores are believed to be preventable with better nursing care. This ended up sealing the nursing home's fate of receiving a very poor nursing rating.
