Facility Inspections
On top of receiving a great overall score, this facility also earned an A+ inspection score. This grade is based on its recent inspection reports. An A+ in this area is one of the highest complements we can pay to a nursing home. Perhaps the most significant factor we look at in determining our inspection scores is deficiencies. Deficiencies can be found on a facility's inspection reports. Places with better scores in this area typically avoided the more severe deficiencies involving patient abuse or death. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
We also wanted to emphasize the fact that this facility excelled in our long-term care category. We awarded them an impressive score of A+ in this category. Facilities that excel in long-term care typically are well-staffed and provide extensive hands on care to patients. In addition to looking at the quantity of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we also looked at the number of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This facility gave the vaccine to 98.36957 percent of its patients, which is much higher than the average nursing home. Lastly, we looked at its number of hospitalizations. With 1.92 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, this nursing home is close to average in this area.
Short-term Care Quality
The third category we assessed was short-term care. We awarded this nursing home a middle of the pack score in the area of short-term care, where it received a B-. Short-term care grades are typically used to score a facility's rehabilitation services To offer highly rated rehabilitation services, nursing homes generally need to provide higher levels of highly skilled nursing. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists and other licensed professionals. This nursing home boosted its score in this category by offering more physical therapy hours to its residents than the average facility. The last datapoint we looked at in this category is the number of residents who eventually returned home from the facility. We found that it performed better than most facilities in this area with 50.9 percent of its patients returning home.
Nurse Quality
The last area we analyzed is nursing. We awarded this facility a solid score in this category, with a B-. Although this isn't as strong as many of its other scores, it is nevertheless not a bad grade. The nursing score features a host of subcategories. The most important factor is the amount of time nurses spent with residents. This nursing home provides 3.8 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also looked at some nursing quality measures and this facility excelled in some of these metrics. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed well in this area. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can generally be avoided by providing better nursing care, such as by having a protocol of moving a patient at least once a day.
