Facility Inspections
While this nursing home's overall grade was not a highlight, it actually excelled in the area of inspections. In fact, we awarded it an A for that area, which is one of our best scores. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in calculating these inspection grades. One key factor is deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of these deficiencies is usually more meaningful than the number of deficiencies, as some are quite minor. This facility was hit with 4 deficiencies on its inspection report, but fortunately none of the deficiencies were considered to be severe deficiencies. This means that the inspectors did not consider any of these deficiencies to cause an imminent risk to patient health or safety. A couple minor deficiencies aren't the end of the world.
Long-term Care Quality
This nursing home's long-term care score ended up being one of its better features. The nursing home was awarded a grade of B- in this category. For prospective residents in need of a permanent residence rather than skilled nursing, long-term care is a very important category. One of the criteria we considered after nursing hours was vaccines. Thankfully, this facility provided the pneumonia vaccination to 98.13333 percent of its residents. This facility also excelled at keeping its residents out of the hospital. It had only 1.59 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days.
Short-term Care Quality
The third highest area we gave this nursing home in any area came in the category of short-term care, where we awarded it a C. In computing our short-term care ratings, we quantify the facility's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. Our purpose is to formulate a barometer for sizing up the rehabilitation services of different nursing homes. We were surprised to find that this facility was below average in the two key staffing areas we looked at. It supplied fewer registered nurse and physical therapist hours per resident than most other nursing homes. It is important to determine whether this also correlates to a lower quality of care. Finally, we assessed the number of patients who were able to return to the community from this facility. We found that 0 percent of this facility's residents returned home. At most facilities, closer to half of their residents are able to return home so this figure is below average.
Nurse Quality
The final category we analyzed is nursing. It received an F in this category, which is a rock bottom score. Our nursing rating is based on the nursing home's nurse staffing levels. We factor in both the levels of licensure of the nurses and the amount of time spent with residents. This facility provided 3.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is below the national average. Unfortunately, this facility also had abysmal marks in several of the quality-based measures to pair with its low nursing hours. We looked at the percentage of residents sustaining pressure ulcers. This facility was at more than twice the national average in this metric.
