In addition to earning a great overall rating, this facility performed even better in our inspections category which is based on the facility's recent government inspection reports. In fact, we gave it a grade of A for this category, which is one of our highest scores. Inspection ratings weigh several factors included in a facility's inspection report. One of the most important criteria we consider is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Facilities with higher grades in this area tend to have very few of these severe deficiencies. This nursing home was hit with 4 deficiencies on its inspection report, but fortunately none were considered to be major deficiencies. This means that CMS did not consider any of the deficiencies to create an immediate risk to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Contributing to this facility's list of accomplishments, it also was given a fine long-term care score. We gave them an elite grade of A in this category. Facilities that excel in this category tend to provide residents with closer supervision and stay on top of routine medical care. In addition to considering the amount of care provided by nurses and other staff, we also looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This nursing home gave the vaccine to 100 percent of its patients, which is what we like to see. Pneumonia is often a life or death health condition for nursing home residents so we prefer when a facility does not take any chances. This facility was also able to keep its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had just 1.32 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days.

Another strong feature for this facility is that it received an impressive nursing grade. In that area, we awarded this facility a grade of B+. The nursing category analyzes several factors, many of which are tied to levels of nurse staffing. This facility provided 3.7 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also assessed several nursing quality-based metrics and this nursing home excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any place the country in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can generally be prevented by providing better nursing care, such as employing a system of moving a patient even once per day.

The final category we looked at was short-term care. In this category, we awarded this nursing home an above average grade of B. Our short-term care scores are based on the facility's quantity of skilled nursing services. This means a vast spectrum of nursing services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and respiratory therapists, as well as other forms of therapy. One of this nursing home's strength is that it offers more hours of physical therapy per week to its residents. Finally, we looked at the number of residents who were able to return home from this facility. We found that 42.5 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home.
