Facility Inspections
In addition to being a great overall grade, this facility also received A+ health inspections in recent years. Its inspections were virtually flawless. Our inspection grades are tied to items located in the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Places that receive favorable grades in this category have few deficiencies on those reports. Most importantly, these places generally do not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with risks to patient safety. While this facility had a few deficiencies on its report, none of them were major deficiencies based on CMS' deficiency scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Nurse Quality
One of the other reasons we rated this nursing home so highly is that it received a very impressive nursing score. In that category, we gave this nursing home an A+. In determining a nursing home's nursing score, we assess the amount of time nurses spend with patients and the skill levels of those nurses. This particular nursing home provided 5.9 hours of nursing care per patient daily. This was one of the more impressive totals we found. In addition, a significant portion of this care was provided by registered nurses, which are highly skilled nurses. These are both really impressive figures. On top of providing impressive levels of care, this facility also excelled in the quality-based metrics we looked at. By way of illustration, it performed as well as any nursing home in the nation in the area of avoiding major falls and pressure ulcers. We look at these statistics as reliable measures of the quality of nursing care being provided.
Long-term Care Quality
The third category we assessed is long-term care. This facility also was awarded an A+ long-term care grade, rendering it one of the few facilities to be given multiple A+ category grades. When facilities receive this type of grade in this category it is typically a good sign for resident care and suggests that the nursing home is well-staffed with nurses aids. In addition to providing well above average levels of nursing care, this facility provided the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its patients. Vaccines are vital to keeping residents healthy. Lastly, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. It had only 0 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.
Short-term Care Quality
The fourth area we scored was short-term care. We gave them another impressive grade of A+ in this area. This rounded out a perfect profile of four A+'s. Our short-term care grade is commonly used to assess a nursing home's performance with rehabilitation. To have highly graded rehabilitation services, facilities generally must feature better levels of highly skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, respiratory therapists and other licensed professionals. Remarkably, this place provides approximately 50% more hours of services from physical therapists and registered nurses than most facilities we looked at. This is a very favorable sign. The final datapoint we assessed in this area is the number of patients who returned home from the nursing home. We found that it performed as well as just about any nursing home in Tennessee in this area with 72.9 percent of its residents returning home.
